Hole, disk or stud?

What do you think is the best device to open a knife with one hand? And why?
As for me, this is a hole -- generaly it is large and hard to miss, when you press thumb into in, you could loose it no more.
And what do you think? Thanks beforehand!

Many people prefer the hole: it doesn't catch on things as the stud and disc do. I don't like the hole much myself, and it doesn't work that well with gloves. The stud is fine but I prefer the disc which is ambidextrous and can be easier to maintain.

I currently have several knives with holes and a few with studs. For me I have found that the hole works better. The hole is easier to acquire and to maintain contact with throughout the entire range of motion necessary to deploy the blade. Studs work fine to but the hole just seems to lend itself to greater ease of operation.

I prefer the hole, for two main reasons.

Number one, as has already been stated, it doesn't catch on stuff.

Secondly, sometimes studs get in the way of sharpening, particularly if you are like me and like to reprofile folders to a much thinner edge than they came with from the factory.

This is a particular problem on my Benchmade 940.

Spyderco has the idea on the one-handers.

The hole is always my preference.
It is easier to open, especially when wearing gloves (I'm surprised HJK said not ?). Also it is naturally ambidextrous, as opposed to those knives that just come with a single stud.

The only advantage I have found with the stud is on knives that have liner locks (and possibly axis locks, but not lock backs), where you can place your thumb next to the stud and thumb flick the knife open like flipping a coin. It looks flashy, but has little other advantage.

I prefer the hole...As a matter of fact i am also designing a few folders at the moment..WITH holes :)

In order:
  • stud - But much undersized from the standard relative size that everyone uses!
hole - Modified. Not the Spydie hole (takes up too much space and spoils the aesthetics of the blade almost every time). Prefer oval, rounded rectangle, or even diamond.
disk - Has great potential, but again almost everyone makes them to dang big!

If you can have 1, pushbutton.
And if you can't, get an axis lock, pull back on the axis, and let the blade drop free to open it or close it :)

Since you're an expert at even fixed blades with holes, the folders will be awesome.

I think I like holes best. They work fine for me, but so do good thumbstuds and discs. The hole makes for a sleeker blade (and deeper penetration depth  )

I really think thumbstuds should be dual, though, since almost every other opener is ambidextrous.

I like the hole the best.

Even with gloves on I find it easy to open and close my current EDC the Spyderco Meerkat.

The hole is also nice on the smaller blades even when they are open.
I find myself putting my thumb in the hole when cutting with it.

I used to hate holes because they don't work well for me using standard opening techniques BUT ever since I discovered the "Spyderco Drop".... :)

Studs are still my favourite (especially ambidextrous!)...disks are third.

my personal preference is for the stud first, hole second. My hand size seems to do better with the studs when sweaty or trying to get it out fast under pressure.

For me, my preferences are:

1. Stud
2. Disc
3. Oval hole
983,283. Sypdie Hole (I HATE round holes)

That's just me of course. :)

Stud
Disc
Hole

I have small hands (FWIW my hand is 6.75" from wrist to fingertip). I belive that holes tend to be placed further from the pivot than studs and that causes a reach problem for me. I really like my Sypderco Native but I find the hole gets out of range of the tip of my thumb near the end of the opening arc. As a result I am not particularly smooth opening it. Having said that, I would never reject a knife merely because it has an opening hole. I just prefer studs on knives.

For me, it's hole or the stud.
I don't see anything particularly wrong with the disk, but I don't prefer them myself.
Hole doesn't catch on things, while studs have proven to work quite well.

1-Thumbstud
2-Hole
3-Nail Nick
100-Disk

Yes thats right, I would rather have a Nail Nick than that useless Disk:barf:

I generally like things with holes :)

Looking forward to seeing them Anso folders too!

Thumbstuds aren't bad. I'm quite fold of flippers too.

1. Thumbstud
2. Hole
3. Disc

If other options were included my list would look a bit different, though:

1. Flipper
2. Arc lock
3. Axis lock
4. Thubstud
5. Hole
6. Disc
