Hole, disk or stud?

I like the Arc-Lock the best because it allows me not only to open the blade quickly using one hand but I can also close it with one hand.

My second choice would be a flipper then a thumbstud.

Opps wrong post. But i like Spyderco hole opening the best. The studs are okay for normal use, but suck with gloves.

Hole, stud, disk...

I find the hole so much faster on the opening and have cut myself slightly less with Spydeys than with anything else while "speeddrawing" :)

Used to love the stud, so to speak. Then i bought a TNT. Now i love the hole, so to speak.:D The disk is a necessary third.

thanks,
Mike

Hole... easier for me to open, gloves or no gloves. As much as I love my Sebenza, the stud makes it THE WORST opening knife I have ever used. It catches on everything, and tears the heck out of my thumb. Spyderco got it right.

Holes all the way... can't beat those Spydies and their holes!
Thumbstuds and then disks....

If it's a Mayo, then round ended hole. If it 's a Crawford KFF, then it's a stud opener I like best. If it's a Jim Hammond Cruiser, then the flipper rules. Finally, if it's a J. W. Smith RF-1, then, of course, the disk opens just fine, thank you. :)

I definitely prefer the hole.

I won't even rate a first, second third list. I simply don't like the studs, and I'm not sure what discs are. Are they the semicircles that are mounted on the spine of the blade near the hinge? If so, nah, don't like 'em either.

My dislike for the stud and disc comes from a personal belief that simplicity is always best. Fewer parts, fewer joints, fewer fasteners -- better. It's why I like Spyderco (holes) and it's why I like Glock. (Glock makes a point of having as few parts as possible.) I really don't like the idea of a *hole* being drilled into the blade just to screw in a stud. And they are never as ergonomically correct (in my limited experience with studs) as holes. I've handled lots of stud knives at gun shows and found they didn't work in my hand well. Practice could help this, but why bother when holes fit just right? Besides, where there's a screw, there's a screw that could *loosen* inadvertently. I've also seen mention of cracks that form in the thin strip of blade steel between the stud and the spine of some knives. Why risk it?

Someone mentioned oval holes over round holes, and I am inclined to agree that the oval hole on my 555 Griptilian (mini) is aesthetically superior to any round hole on any of my Spydercos.

The hole all the way. I really like the oval hole on the Benchmade AFCK. Second, the stud...provided that it is not too "pointed"
Last, the disk. I like the look, it just doesn't work as well as the others:)

A bit of a blowout in favour of the hole. Maybe we should do a poll to see what the actual numbers are, or update the old one [I think we did one once]. No votes for the fingernail indentation that ruled for years? In Canada they're considering a law to make it mandatory on all knives...:)

Thanks, guys! You gave me much things to think about!
BTW -- does anuone likes discs? Just curious.:)

I prefer the hole as studs, discs and in the old days,"flick-its" alway limit the depth of cut while slicing cheese, salami, etc. The hole allows use of the entire blade.Another choice is the Wave.Talk about fast deployment!Anyhow below is My preference.tom.

1.round hole

2.wave

3.disc

4.dual studs only

I think it depends on the size of the hole. My Spyderco Police and my Endura are terrific, but the holes on my Mini-Dyad are dang near useless. Very small studs are better than very small holes.

I don't have much experience with the disk.

BTW, after using a Kershaw Scallion and a CRKT M16, I have to say that the flipper is pure genius!

Good luck,
Allen.

If you don't wear gloves, I'd bet my money on the Spyderco Hole.
Next comes thumb stud closely followed by the disk.

The Spydie opening is fastest and best IMHO. The hole even lets the user open the knife vertically, snapping the knife out.

I don't have too much of a preference being all three work just as well for me if they are done correctly.....it all depends on the knife itself and how it is exactly positioned on the blade.

Sometimes one may look better than the others, too, depending on it's style and the knife it will be on.

I more or less go by what the knife looks like and has to offer, usually the hole, disk, or stud will go with the knife that it is on.
