This test doesn't really mean squat as the grinds are only half the story and factors such as steel thickness etc come into play !
In saying that I figured I'd pit one of each grind type against each other just for the hell of it !!!

I picked Fuzz sticks as the test and ensured that the wood they cut was all from the same two blocks so that the test was equal !

Up first was my hollow ground Ka-Bar D2 Impact point. I have got to say that on this particular test I found the knife quite hard to control and it performed the worst outta the group !

Next up was my Convexed BlackJack Grunt. The handle on this knife is the best I have ever held, it just feels perfect and has to be tried to fully understand what I'm talking about. This knife is a great all rounder and performed fairly well on both pieces of wood but was still harder to control than a scandi grind !

Next it was onto my Scandi Koster Nessmuk. This knife is just a wood carvers dream, it cuts precise every time and slides through like butter.Outta the 3 this was by far the best !!!

Just for kicks I thought I'd pit my Mora against the same sections of wood.
I have to say that this knife even edges the Koster outta top spot.Even a monkey could make decent fuzz sticks with this knife ! You can cut thick straight into the wood or skim the edge taking off slices thin enough to see through !!!!!
Here is the wood cut by the Mora next to that cut by the Koster.....very close call I know but I have to give it to the Mora !

Scandi ground knives are quite something. I'd never used one until my first Mora. I was quite impressed. I have the Bravo-1, which I thought was top notch, but in terms of ease of cut, I'd have to give it to the Mora as well. Great tests, good idea testing each type of grind against each other. Well done.

That Blackjack Grunt looks nice .... real nice !

Yeah I never understood why they weren't more popular on this forum ?

They are made in China now outta a different steel but from what I have heard they are still a good knife !

+1 for scandi edges.

Until my Koster Bushcraft arrives my only scandi blades are Mora's and they simply the best knives I have for wood working. I can make much nicer fuzz sticks with them than my F1 or any other expensive knife.

I've gotta custom O1 steel knife with Scandi grind that looks like a Mora on steroids. It will outcut anything else I have. Also have a Skookum Bushtool on order, should arrive by the end of the year and is also Scandi grind. - - I am now comparing the Scandis to my convex grind knives (including a Bark River Gameskeeper, Fallkniven F1 and H1 in 3G laminated powder steel) to see how they compare as a bushcraft/wilderness/& (potentially) outdoor survival knife. How durable is the Scandi edge versus the convex when used on a good quality knife ? Should know more as I test them for myself. - - -

theres a bucket full of those orange handle moras at a local fishing store near my place, as well as a shelf full of other moras.

when it comes to making feather sticks scandi is the winner :D

thanks for the pics pit

I realsed that I did not test a Sabre grind so after a few minutes outside we have this....

My SwampRat Ratmandu. This is my favourite knife that I have so I would have loved it to have won this test, I sorry to say it didn't but it did perform quite well and if I had to head off into the wilderness armed with only one blade it would still be this one !!!
Now to carry it lovingly back into it's warm little spot at the side of my bed !!!!!

Uh... I'm not sure this is a genuine Pitdog thread. Where are the Maisy pictures? Our mascot wasn't present?

Cool little test...I've never used a Scandi knife. I suppose a mora couldn't hurt my wallet too much.

Pit,
I just got a Grunt about 2 months ago..I had a Spec Ops sheath (short version) and it fits great...a real step up for a great knife that comes with a terrible sheath. I wont go so far as to say the handle is perfect...but its pretty good, and the knife is a real Bargain!!! I cant think of a better knife for $20. I will have to beat on it and take some pictures. Gene

Nice test. Those grunts perform very well considering price. I love that mora and koster!

The Mora and the Koster are both scandi, but the Mora cuts better. Why do you think, blade thickness or something else?

I am with you on the hollowgrind, I don't find them too useful for woodsworking. I do however prefer a convex grind over the Scandi though. I find I get more control with the convex. I have a Koster bushcraft scandi grind I love but it just seams to bite so deep into the wood. With the convex I can make really thin Fuzz sticks. Just a me thing.:o
