Hollow handle knife/spear

Hello Willy,

I don’t actually remember the company I used but I jumped on the internet and looked up martial arts equipment places and checked out staffs (can’t remember the correct martial arts term) but a lot of those places sell a 6 foot staff and usually have several wood options. I believe I got a 1.25 inch staff and used a draw knife to get it to fit as most of the spear head fittings taper. I hope that is helpful.

David Mary.

An idea might be to size your knife to an easily bought handle.

Picked at random.

Shovel handle could work and is designed for harsh use.
I have thought about using garden tool handles to haft a spear, but most of them are 5 feet long or less. I am over 6 feet tall and am wary of carrying a spear with a haft short enough to put the edge/point of the spearhead at or below eye level when standing or walking. I have also tried to find hardwood dowels at my local hardware stores but have struck out on finding anything longer than 4 feet. 4 feet might work for an Assegai or Ilkwa, but I want something with longer reach for reasons mentioned above and for use on wild hogs.

Understood. All you need is a grove of English Ash trees and there should be plenty of stock for true spear length timber! I just harvest from one of my Estates. Well, I say "I", when I mean I have some of the little men down at the village do it, of course. Wut,wut. 🧐

😂

Huh...just did a search and 84 Inch Pole Staves seem to be readily available.
Well I'll be dogged, is that what that google thing is good for? It looks like there are some pretty reasonable options that are worth a shot.

I'd like to harvest my own but any woods worth a fig in my area are hard, knotty, and twisted with a twisted grain that seems to rip itself apart when drying.

I use DDG for searches. Less invasive.

My neighbors down the street have a nice stand of bamboo. I would if they'll miss a stave or two??

You guys will have to buy them separately. The shipping cost just to get one to me in Canada is four times the cost of the item itself!

And obviously, don't buy one for this until I have confirmed it's officially underway.
Reliks Inc. in Canada list Paul Chen staves on their site. I know nothing about Reliks, but at least you might have a source for your use. Edit: OOS, sorry
