Home Defense Shotgun- I think I got a good one!!!

OK, I'll rephrase. It's NOT stolen. End of story.
Gun is registered to someone with the same last name as the seller. I have a bill of sale and all the info from the guys license. Furthermore I just asked the Police Capt next door if there was any way for this to be an issue and he said in no uncertain terms "NO" because of all the information I collected during the transaction. I did what I was legally required to do to buy the gun legally. Unless you, personally, have a way to run serial numbers then I suggest you never buy a gun from a private citizen. I, on the other hand, will continue to follow my State's and Federal regs and will buy firearms from private citizens when a good deal presents itself while collecting the required information to make the transaction legal and official.

What are you getting upset about? Nobody said anything about you not following your states laws or that you did anything illegal. You obviously had the same thoughts as I did, since you later stated you got the serial checked by your friend the Police Chief. Chris

I'm not upset, I'm annoyed that when an idea comes up, like "Oh no, maybe it's stolen", then people will argue that a transaction was either wrong or shouldn't have taken place. Without being defensive, look at the last dozen posts and tell me you don't see it.

I don't see anything in the posts except good common sense, which you had also. I didn't see anyone accuse or insinuate anything, other than it might be a good idea to check the gun out. It would have been a lot easier if you would have said you had it checked out first, instead of waiting for someone to bring it up. I will see my way out of this conversation.

Once again, fine looking shotgun. Chris

Md 25v good on you!

Somebody will always have a better way of doing things!! This time another Registered User, they always have to put their 2 cents in but can't contribute to the forums.

Very, very good of you! Very good indeed. That's one of those 'faith in humanity' themes that I like to hear. And it's not like it's a bath for you, that's a great scattergun!!

I understand but we all have different ideas of how things should work. I was just a "registered user" until I wanted to sell a few knives and then just kept up on the membership. We may have had different opinions about one small detail in the thread but this forum is a great place to share those different ideas. I was a little defensive as well and there is no fault or issue here, just a couple ideas that didn't follow the same path. As far as Chris, myself, or the thread is concerned that's done and moved on and there's no reason for me to think less of someone's contributions because they are not thinking the same way or especially because they have a basic membership. We are, after all, here to share our different opinions and experiences so that we can all learn from each other's ideas.

Also, the truth is that while I was so happy with the deal I had not even considered any wrongdoing on the part of the seller until I saw the "could be stolen" comment. I'm at work now and when I posted that I checked the serial number, that is actually when I checked it. I'm a few offices down from the Capt so I asked him to have one of the guys check it. I was a little defensive because I was also embarrassed that I had not even thought that something could have been up.

I just get worked up when people have so much contribute in words, but cant support the place where they give/get ideas.

Thanks, lets all try to spread the WS&S love around here.
Thanks to everyone who has complemented on the gun and to Chris and Eyegor, thanks for reminding me that while it's nice to try to do right by someone it always important to cover your @ss.

There could be any number of reasons why people haven't sprung for a Gold or Platinum membership, 1sharpedge. Poverty springs readily to mind, for one. I'm looking at getting a Platinum membership, but that will be awhile, since I live on a government pension of less than $650 per month. In the meantime I'll just have to limp along on a basic membership, just like so many other people here who are contributors.

There are many basic members here who try — and do — contribute to BF. I, for one, dislike the kind of elitist, disparaging attitude that I just saw. Money isn't the only way people can contribute here, and it's good that basic members can contribute until they have the wherewithal to get a better membership.

Congratulations on your purchase, and the way you went about it.

(p.s., don't swat at the mosquitoes, it just makes them swarm more. :) )

That was an unnecessary and useless thing to say. People advocating common sense and wariness are not posting something useless. Attacking someone's user status is weak, too.:thumbdn:

Md 25v, glad this was a good transaction all around. My first thought on reading your description was to wonder at the circumstances. This sounds like the sort of story someone would concoct to sell stolen goods. You got all needed details, and things worked out well.

Having grown up in California with it's tight gun control, this type of transaction seems bizarre. Washington has looser laws on buying and selling, but I'd still want to make sure everything was checked out when buying a gun from an unknown person.

You did, you got a good deal, and you dealt honorably with the guy selling his gun. Good for you.

Nice gun, sounded like the family needed the cash. I just bought a Marlin .45-70 1895G, dont have much of a story for it, but got a pretty good deal, and I love the gun.

Great looking piece Md! I've always like FN shotguns and you did well on both accounts.

Chris/August West (formerly known as Runningboar) has been an excellent contributing member in this forum for a long time. He gave some good advice which is quite common in most pawn shops around military towns. An old E8 buddy of mine worked at a well known gun/pawn shop outside of Fort Bragg. Quite often ladies would bring in some expensive firearms and pawn them not knowing their real value. He use to always give me a heads up as he was an honest guy and give them some advice that they could make more money in a private sale. My biggest fear was that their ex-husband/boyfriend could easily report their firearm "stolen" which would be a mess to get involved in.

I love shopping at Pawn shops as you can often find some great deals and do a little haggling. I'm glad things worked out for both, because a knowledgeable and shady pawn owner would have taken that guy for a ride.

You really can't go wrong with a Marlin levergun and that's one of my "soon to get" models. I have the 18in stainless Guide gun. I bought it because I got a good deal at a show and it looked nice but ever since I have wanted a more traditional lever gun. The 1895 is what I have settled on. Man, you got a nice gun there. I'm jealous.

Good to know honest people are still out here and Bladeforums seems to be full of them. Does my heart good to hear stuff like this.

Md 25v You sir are a gentleman  I bill of sale with drivers licence number covers you behind. and not taking advantage of some one is rare these days.
"as you sow, so shall you reap " "Good Karma" " what goes around comes around" what ever you believe the principle works.
Congrats on the new gun
 for being a Do whats right Gentleman
