Home Defensive Knives, which do you use?????

Since I live in a country were you can´t have handguns my knife don´t go bang. I usually drop my pants next to the bed. There I have my Endura. I feel thats eneugh. If not my dubbelbarrel 12 gauge and my semiautomatic rifle isn´t that long away. (2 year old boys like guns so they are not under the bed)

Let's see, in descending order:
1. A very large and territorial Doberman/Timber Wolf hybrid.
2. An 18" Ontario machete(soon to be replaced by a CR Shadow IV or a Fallkniven F1vs S1)
3. Within arms reach 440 V Military(plain edge) and BM Stryker.
Scenerio 4, for comic relief only

4. If all else fails, and since I have no "firepower" as yet, I can rely on my wife to rise to the occasion.(My wife is Hispanic and as anyone who is married to or dated one of Latino or Hispanic descent can attest to, you do not want to piss them off and be the focus of their anger)

My home defense knife is a Remington 870 Police Model all tricked out with six shot capacity loaded with #1 buck, more deadly then 00. Backed up by a Kimber .45 loded with Hydra-Shocks. . Which are all backed up by a bunch of .357s.

All this with an early warning dog system.

My home defense KNIFE -- to stick to the subject -- is a Gryphon M10A1. I don't like to talk about my entire home defense strategy, as I feel doing so would provide a blueprint to defeating it.

I use the Gryphon M10A1 because it's my only "fighter". Most of my bigger knives are "combat/utility" type knives, they're not nimble in the hand like the Gryphon. I've been thinking I need a good fighting bowie to replace the Gryphon (mostly because the Gryphon's handle isn't quite secure enough for me). I'm looking at Ernest Mayer's bowies, and the new Ontario Bill Bagwell Bowies.

That's my big knife. I must confess I don't often carry that knife around the house though. The knife I do carry is my Rinaldi TTKK. It's more useful all-around, and has a more convenient sheath (which is really the most important factor, it turns out). Once my 5.5" TTKK shows up, that'll probably end up being my defense knife.

In the end, I can't really say that these knives I've discussed are my "home defense" knives. I use different equipment for home defense, but do keep a large knife with the gear.

I don't think knves are very efficient defensive weapons, in that few knife wounds give a near instant stop. And think about all that blood you'll have to clean up! Having said that, there's no harm in covering all the bases, hence the gerber MkII in a drawer next to my bed, opposite side to the door(black blade as I belive that to give a slght advantage if the intruder is not expecting me to be armed, though that's not why I bought it) next to that drawer is a maglite, and on the other side of the bed are a 4' oak staff and two 2' ones (they just happen to be there, but I think that's where they'll stay).

I think blunt trauma to head, joints or major muscle group is a more reliable defence than edged weapons. Oh, and don't worry about my ability to use that 4' staff in a confined space my techniques are more economic than my writing style!

I forgot to mention the sacrificial 14" TV, and my extensive battery of hard back books.

I guess I'm not the only one with a pile of sticks next to my bed. They are much less messy
The knives are quite handy in the drawer if need be, but, I'd rather stay about 2 ft away if I have to beat on someone. Use the knife to cut a good piece of rope to hog tie them.
The wife doesn't much care for the .38 It stays stashed away from the youngsters. It is around mostly because we have horses, and, horse owners must always be prepared to do what needs to be done if the need arise. I pray I never have to again.
Sorry, I digress

A sawed off( just a bit) double barrel 12g stuffed with dimes..Just point and hit....
KATANA..aprox. 29" blade, very sharp too!
A minature schnauzer couch rat that barks at 137 decibels...

Personally, I think that Bartman's mini schnauzer that barks at 137db along with a Latino wife would be an unbeatable combination! No offense, William, your truthful description (there are two latino families in neighboring homes to mine!) along with Bart's super-powered dog just cracked me up!!! Hehehe!!!

I do agree with Spark, as far as staying in the room and waiting. When my wife and I have kids (maybe), I will then have to do the dangerous chore of room-clearing. I use a high-cap Glock 19 (I admit that's light, and I do have .45's, but the wife can shoot the G-19 comfortably and it's loaded with Cor-Bon 115's anyways!) with Surefire flashlight, and a shotgun for backup (Benelli M1 S90) loaded with #2 Buck and a full bandoleer handy. My knives are purely tools.

Since people mentioned having a cell phone ready in the bedroom, I feel I should advice members here based on message from the police: DO NOT use cell phone for emergency if you have a choice. Cell phones are great when you're in the car, but inside your house, use a land-line cordless phone. With a regular land-line phone (cordless or otherwise), you just dial 911 and you name, phone number and ADDRESS will be showing up on the computer screen of the 911 call centre, even if you hangup without saying a word. No such luck with cell phone.

As for knife, I've a 7" fixed blade, but I can't find a place where it is readily available for me but not my 3 year old :-( .

You guys are gonna love this.....
My grandad was a SD in South Dakota at the turn of the Century and had some interesting blasters. The one I use as first defense shooter is an 8ga. double bbl. black powder with 24" tubes. My grandad used it for room sweeper in some of the drinking establishments. I have it loaded with 00Buck and when it goes off, to say it's impressive, is a real understatement. Only one shot per customer. If they are close together it can accomidate more than one if I have at least 15' to work with. In the off chance that both bbls. missfire the gun is backed up with a Cold Steel "Boar Spear" with the shaft cut down to 4'. Lucky for me that being a weldor I can see fairly well in dim light with shades on, cuz when that cannon goes off it really lights up the night. And with the insuing clowd of smoke..... Advantage mine.
Happy Trails,
Dan

Well, let's see...

There's the German Shepherd/Lab mix in the front room (she probably wouldn't fight much as she's still a puppy, but she lets me know whenever anything is out of place, and I mean anything. Too much really

)

Next to my bed is usually my Beretta 92FS with 13 Black Talons in the mag. Presently, my Beretta is away getting night sights, so I have a buddy's (a Marion County Sheriff Deputy) S&W 5906 with Hydra-Shoks (sweet pistol).

A Sure-Fire 6P sits right next to the pistol.

The old Kabar is next to the bed as well. (to be replaced by my AZ Hunter, probably, when it arrives) My cell-phone is there too.

Also, my Remington 870 is in the closet with the deer barrell and alternating 3" Magnum shells of 00 and slugs.

If none of that works, I expect the collateral damage done to the house will cause a collapse and take them all out.

Hmmmm... home defense knife. My home defense tools include:

* a pair of Weimaraners
* a couple of Glocks (.45 cal)
* a couple of shotguns (Rem. 1187 12 ga.)
* several easily accessed flashlights
* common sense

Hmmm.. My 9" Magnum Tanto is always somewhere accessible for me.
smile.gif
If that doesn't scare him off, my WWII Katana will make him think twice.

I always have my Surefire 6Z beside me, w/ new batteries in place at night. When it hits you, you won't be able to see the person behind the light, and that's my first line of defense, non-violence.. unless he's carrying a gun, then in that case (Titan, are you reading this?) he gets to meet Mr. Glock 18 full-auto..

Don't even ask me where I got it.

It's an oldie, but can do wonders.

My home early warning is a Rottweiler. Doesn't bark much when there is actually someone around. More like rumbles. My home defense knive, in order of availability, are a Spyderco Native (just because it's always just under my right hand), a BM Axis 710 (just under my left hand), and a Gerber BMF (stashed elsewhere). But any of those would only be used if I couldn't lay my hands on a more preferable tool.

Now I lay me down to sleep......

Hard to do without at least a couple of knives sitting on the nightstand, just to look at before I drift off after reading, sometimes I'll open a Sebenza up and set it on the clock radio while I read and glance up at it now and then, but for defense, I use to keep the Trailmaster bowie under the mattress, much to my wife's disapproving glares. Now I have the 11 1/2" chisel edge tanto I made resting next to a couple of folders, just to keep me company til the dawn breaks, then it's back in the jeans/or jacket where they belong for another days' work. (and they call us knife nuts?)

well since I'm 18 and I don't have money to spend on a fire arm (other than an old bolt action 22 rifle and an old AR-7) And I think that it will be a while since what had happened last week. well anyways I have a bunk bed I sleep on the bottom and have the knifes stored at the edge tucked up under the blanket both are cold steel: a nylon Delta Dart and a Cat tanto. I also have a big bowe knife (somebody had made a bowe out of a corn knife)

Since I'm not seriously into firearms (yet), my current "security blanket" is my old reliable 8" Randall Model 1, bungeed to the lower part of the bedframe where I can reach it quickly. I realize that a knife it not a particularly effective home defense tool, but it makes me feel better knowing it's there. I also keep a big ol' MagLite next to the bed, although right now it can probably only be used as a makeshift club (it's been a while since I changed the batteries...

).

My family sleeps better with the following: Matthews Z-Max, XX78's & Rocket Sidewinders. Rem. #870, Browning Hi-Power (9mm), S&W #4013 (40cal.). Assorted BM's...

Thompson with extra 30 round mags, (other firepower available). 20" chainpuri khukuri, 17" chainpuri khukuri, (other edged weaponry including battleaxe and two hand sword ((45" double edged blade))available). Just a peaceloving bleedinghearted Pollyanna type social worker who wouldn't hurt a fly. Trust me on this.
