Hey, I wanted to start a thread where everyone could either share by telling or posting pics of their 'homegrown' (custom modified) spyderco knives or ones they have seen somewhere. I have none of my own as of yet...I've not gotten past the descretion of a spyderco, but I've been eyeing several of my Natives to modify handles or blades. So if any of you like modding and want to share some of your work with us again please post it here. Thanks again! :p

This is my modified Spur. It's the first generation model (GIN-1), not the current release. I wanted to make just the insert to replace the kraton, but that was too dificult. So I started filing away and removed about all metal surrounding the insert, except near the pivot. Then I glued a piece of curly birch to it and sanded that in shape and polished it.

Nice knife Jestyr...can you share with us how you did that or had someone do it for you? Something about the process or what not...for those of us interested in modding our Spydercos or other knives...Thanks again for posting! :D

Those are awesome Guys! Jestyr, How did you create that wicked pattern on you Delica?

Ted, thanks for sharing how you did it. :)
Jestyr, How'd you go about this?
Krinkle coat on blade?
Tom

I asked about that Delica a while back.
I will let Jestyr give the details of how.I tried it on a clip but I am not that good at it so I haven't tried it on a blade.

just a steady hand, a dremel and lack of fear that you will screw something up. the carbon fiber delica lent itself well to this project because i could take the blade out and not have to worry about the handle. the little bug i got from spyderco. i used a very little bit of glue to tack it down and scratched an outline on the carbon fiber. after that i pooped the bug off and dremeled out a recess to put the bug in more permanently.

I definitely like that Native! Did you use an SS variant Native for it? Can you tell us how you went about it? I think that you posted a thread somewhere about it before, didn't you? Anyhow, do you use it as an EDC or part of your collection? And if its part of your collection did you ever think of selling it? Let me know...thanks! :p

kudzu,
It started as a G10 native with blue inlay. I wanted to get the Mammoth Ivory to replace the scales. The material was not stiff enough. Since the original was linerless he built white micarta liners and then put the ivory in the handles. To keep the pivot in the firmest position the micarta is thicker around the pivot (like a bolster) there is also brass between the bolster and the ivory. the rivets were also replaced with screws. It was more work more than expected since the project changed mid stream (linerless). It came out very good. I only noticed a little grinding on the top of the lockbar to keep it flush with the scales. It locks up great and the action is smooth. I carry it ocassionally.

I was trying to find a good platform for modifications. The native is good, since then I did the para and I'm finding the para fits me better than the native. I was also trying to find different colorations in red/white and blue. I've also found that Spyderco G10 is stiffer than the aftermarket G10. Now my next goal is to see if I can get some Spyderco G10 like the Lil' Temp green or maybe dodo blue :). I may even try tip-up too.

At this time I want to keep it but you never know.

I believe there are different variations of G10 or what not...I saw somewhere on a knifemakers site that you can not only buy different colors but toughness as well...though I think it was referred to as like G11 or G12. I'm not too sure on this...I'll have to research it a lil' bit. Though it would make sense in why you noticed a difference between Spyderco's G10 and other aftermarket stuff. Perhaps the knifemaker/customizer has the answers on this one or Sal can throw in his knowledge for us. Either way I'll find out about it! :p

Just got this back today. Schempp Persian, modified for me by sc_rebel. Enlarged and chamfered thumbhole, traction grooves on the ramp, brass pins and lanyard tube, "swiss cheesed" liners.

Here's a couple:

and there's another cute one, a Jester with integral bolsters and stag handles, but no pics available right now. :(

Kudzu-
in Bob Terzuola's book "the tactical folding knife", he talks about G11 and g12. they exist, they are much harder than g10, making them nearly impossible to work with. He said they are generally used for high-performance boomerangs.
-are you going to the Fl. knifemakers show in october? Hopefully, I'll be there.

Has anyone tried customizing the Spyderco Viele folder?

I was thinking about replacing the Micarta Scales with Carbon Fiber or something, but if anyone has already done something of the sort please share some pictures! :D
