I just received a nice Al Mar SERE 2000 by USPS Priority Mail and found a light green sticker says that Homeland Security had opened my package!:eek: Anyone else had this experience? At least they left the knife in the box.

To be fair, this was a package from Guam. But still... what gives?

Jim

I had a folder mailed to the US from Sweden be opened and examined by US customs. They resealed it with a similar printed tape. It delayed its arrival (presumably) by a day or two, but everything in the package was left intact. Sicne it was coming in from overseas, and said knife on the cn-22 decleration, it didn't surprise me that they opened it to ensure compliance with import regulations.

Can you prove you voted for Obama?
If not,you may be a domestic terrorist.

The fact that it came from a US Protectorate is the real issue. I don't think import restrictions would apply, which means this seems more like actual threat assessment.

I'm going to move this from the General Knife Discussion to to FEEDBACK.

I am baffled that Homeland Security would set itself up as an "internal customs agency".

No problem either place, but we usually end up with mailing questions here, so it fits that pattern better than General Knife, which is for discussing the knives themselves, not how they're dealt with.

Congratulations, you're now on Janet's list of potential domestic terrorists !!!

Guys, let's not get into the comedy routines here. We have Whine & Cheese and the Political Arena for any other aspects of the discussion. This is a potentially interesting problem for us if internal communications are coming under such deliberately intrusive inspection.

Exactly!

The question is: does customs regularly check shipments from US Territories such as Guam and Puerto Rico or is this new?

I just flew in from Guam and boy are my arms tired...Lol...

This is the first I have heard of this. Guam? was it sent from an APO? or regular parcel post or UPS? more details would be interesting.

I always wondered about whether some mail gets checked. That is why I never pulled the trigger on some Automatics that some websites sell. I know people that have with no problems but it isn't worth it to me.

I think US Customs usually only inspects for tax violations. My guess is that they were fishing for automatics. I don't know where the OP is posting from, but automatics are illegal in Guam and certainly illegal to ship across stat lines. That seems like the kind of thing Homeland Security would be tasked with enforcing. They likely have probably cause for a search if there's anything on the package that indicates there's a knife in it.

That's why I always send my knives to the US/Canada flat rated.

I just put it/them in a bubble envelope and make sure it fits through the slot of a mail box. This way it will come by regular mail and not end up at the customs.

I send quite a few knives to the US/Canada/Australia even one to Malysia. Never went wrong so far.

At the same time I ask others to send me the knives that way as well when possible;)

Since this is more to do with shipping than knives themselves and since some folks do not understand that political discussion has no place in the knife discussion forums ... off to GB&U.
