Honest Eval On SERE 2K...Good, bad & Ugly

Great review Kodiak! The fact that some people have problems with the spine whack and others don't just goes to show the problems inherent in liner locks. Using my SHARP scientific computer EL-5500II, I calculated a point grade of 1.8, based on a 4 point scale and C it is! 1.7 is a C-.

One other comment. If liner locks can be prone to failure when new, what happens when the stop pin starts to wear? Does the lock become weaker or stronger? Certainly if the wear is too great and there is actually play in the lock, it should be pretty unreliable shouldn't it? And I wonder how that compares to lockbacks? I have a lot of old lockbacks with play in the lockup.

Great review Kodiak, I liked my SERE when I had one, but for the same tasks I prefer the LCC or Spyderco Military. All are excellent knives.
I'll admit that this thread had me a little scared as to the reliabilty of my daily carries.
I twisted, pressed, whacked and pulled (while wearing kevlar lined gloves, wish I had chain link

) and was not able to produce a lock failure. The liner on the Military slid almost until failure when using a combination of twisting the handle and applying extreme (for a folder) pressure on the spine.
I was not able to budge the liner on the LCC.
I have never encountered a real life situation which would place this level of stress on the lock of a folder.

To follow up on Joe T.'s comment about your not censoring yourself, I think you oughtta give TK a call about a job!

Greg,
I just received a SERE 2000 today and although I haven't used it much, I like it. I did a pretty severe spine wack test and it only served to tighten up the lock. I agree with your points on the spine and thumb studs being sharp though.
One thing that puzzles me though is that you say your knife has thumb ridges on the liners. Mine is smooth. That's a pet peeve with me. I wonder if it just slipped past QC or is Al Mar just not doing it anymore. Anybody else not have thumb ridges on their liners?
And BTW, how does this knife come apart? Looks like the scales need to be removed to get at the assembly screws. Right?

I just lost the brief message I had typed in here. Basically it was that my comment appears at:

Al Mar Sere 2000 in new TK magazine

I have not had any problems with the knife and enjoy using it, especially since I rounded the overly sharp/abrupt shoulders on the blade, as further described in the cited thread. I have found the thumbstuds to be fine, and will pay attention to see whether I ever experience any opening problem. The discussion with respect to the liner lock reminds me why I bought a Sebenza. I do love the deep pocket clip on the SERE 2000 and it cuts great.

Fantastic review Greg. Thanks!

Hi Lenny,

I must have confused you regarding the liner lock...there are no serrations on mine.

Yes, I had to take the scales completely off to reposition the knife. The nylon washers were a tad difficult to realign but it seems to work fine now and the lock appears solid at this point.

Bottom line, this is a good knife with a lot of potential. I appreciate all the comments.

Roy,
I am not totally sure of the correct answer to your question but I noticed that the tang stamp on some S2K's have "SERE 2000" stamped on them. Mine doesn't have that. Which came first I am not sure.
