Honest opinion about a Bowie

Bear & Son make a variety of sandvick 12c27 frontier style Bowie’s either in 7” or 9” blades around $78 brass guard and handles either cocobolo or bone; alamaba Damascus blades are a twice the price.

Or a chef's knife... ;)
For true, "Original Bowie" feel. :D

Bagwell wrote the book on the modern day combat Bowie but I get what your saying

If he wants a historic as in large camp knife type blade there a lot of options

When it comes to what I would consider a good production Bowie than I’d stick to what I said the CS stuff besides the cable tangs feel the closest to what I would consider a good Bowie

Given the nebulous nature of how a Bowie knife is defined from person to person, I’d venture that a Fällkniven A1 scratches the itch, whilst being an exceptionally useful outdoors knife. Modern as they come, and not suggesting it for somebody looking for their idea of an ‘authentic’ Bowie, but to my eyes it is clearly in the zone. Great knife.

Part of the problem is that no one can really agree on what makes a knife a BOWIE knife. It's been said the Sandbar Fight knife was just a 10" butcher knife with a sharpened clip. I'm partial to the Daniel Searles style knives, myself. If I was to purchase a new production Bowie strictly as a fighter, the Cold Steel Natchez Bowie would be the one. Kind of a modern take on the Joe Musso bowie, it's a classic shape. But if all I could afford was a 10" chef's knife from Wallyworld, and a sweet cardboard and duct-tape sheath, I wouldn't feel under-dressed if trouble came calling. For a working Bowie knife, there are so many good choices that it's practically mind-blowing. Not a fan-boy here, but if I had to recommend a working Bowie, again, Cold steel gets the nod. Either the Trail Master or the Recon Scout. Just because they're nearly indestructible, for the average user, and because carbon steel is easier to sharpen.

That's why I said 'nearly' indestructible, and added' 'for the average user.' They're easy to find, reasonably inexpensive, and will do normal knife stuff reasonably well, assuming you choose the right tool for the job. I don't currently own any CS products, that's not to say I wouldn't if the urge struck me. YMMV.

Forget the fancy stuff and get a Marble's Bowie machete! Remove the paint with some paint remover and sharpen it to a razor edge. Now you have a great bowie.
Rich

The only wrong question is the one unasked. Also I thought we all bought knives just because we like or just want them. I'm not partial to bowies but it is a classic. Like the buck 110. I have one but don t carry it. Get it

This ^^^ and Horsewright Horsewright both touch on the differences on what people call a Bowie knife. That’s Boo,ee Not Bowie like the former Rock Star .—————-. the Bowie Knife came from a large Butcher knife that you could take apart a Buffalo , Cow, Rabbit, or Person if need be, along with split some wood to build a fire. I have made a few for customers and have a 70’s Western model 49 I really like!!———————————————- I prefer & recommend a FFG rather than the hollow ground models... Handle as many as possible before buying .. I’m a tad over 6’4” 245lbs and large frame and hands. What feels great to me, may not feel as good in the hand to you?———————— And it’s ok to own more than one!;)
