Hook uses

So, is it a can opener?

Interesting...

What about the hook on the Swisstool Spirit? it is at the base of the awl, which would pierce anything you'd try to carry or grab.

I've read somewhere that it was a gutting hook... isn't it sharp?

I used the hook to remove the brake-light casing on my van.

Choubbi: its not sharp at all so I would recommend it for gutting.

A bird gutting hook is nothing more than a blunt, dull hook used to pull the entrails (guts for you seasoned veterans :D ) through a cut made in the rear of the bird. Personally, I use my finger. :p

Thanks for the explanation of "gutting hook", I had it wrong, I thought it was a sharpened hook used to cut the skin more quickly than with a knife. thanks!

same here. :o

however, the vic hook still would not be ideal: it would be too short - unless you plan gutting sparrows ;)

My wife flies a lot for work and I see her off and pick her up pretty often. I always carry my knife. Security at San Antonio Intn'l takes no notice as I am not trying to board a plane with it. Lately I have switched to wearing my Buck 110 (and an attitude just shy of getting arrested). It is legal. Period. Never even got a second glance.

The sharpened gutting hooks (like those found on the backs of fixed blades) are used for opening up an animal. Two different types of "gutting hooks" for two different gutting applications.

I use the hook to remove especially subborn boogers.

I have found two different explanations for the hook. The first is from a photo taken directly from the Boy Scout catalog, showing the Boy Scout Wood Badge Huntsman and a description of it's tools:

The second explanation came from the female cashier/clerk at the Boy Scout store: "It's for gutting birds."

This came up before....

Someone suggested you could use it as a makeshift coat hanger. I thought that was pretty cool...

Funny also, mentioning about the straight pin. I bought a cybertool off ebay that was supposed to have one. I'll be darned if I could find where it would be on the knife. Turns out it was missing, and I did eventually figure out where it was supposed to live.

Here's another one - use it to grab a string or some such that you're trying to thread through a tight space. If you can't get your fingers in to grab the string, it'd be better than using the blade & thus allowing your knife to bite you like I did today! DUH!!

But you'd have the same problem with the awl getting in the way if you tried to eviscerate anything.
