Horsewright Knives and Leather

Well someone had a Bday around these parts. So hadn't been too busy. I did finish off a pair of leggings (charmitas), something I hadn't done in a while. These went to a horse trainer in Colorado:

So I was sitting in the backyard just relaxing:

Nichole reminded me that Alberto was coming early the next morning. Alberto is our farrier. We have to stretch a couple hundred foot extension cords out for him as there is no electricity down at the barns. Two hundred foot extension cords are kinda heavy so it's my job to stretch those out. I plugged into the house and started stretching them out and down the hill. We have to go across our new arena these days. I was struck by how pretty the sky was as I was feeding it through the arena fence:

Stretched er out and looked back and wow!

Got er all coiled up for Alberto and went back to the back yard. Finished off my cigar and my whiskey:

Speaking of which a good friend presented me with this bottle of Charles Goodnight bourbon for my Bday. She'd been at a family deal down in Texas and brought it back for me:

Its pretty serious sipping whiskey:

Happy birthday Dave 🎂

I'm sure they've gone to a good home. ;)🤠

Like the footwear, they do look comfortable.
Merrell hiking boots and yes sir they are!. Yes the leggings have gone to a good home. This is the second pair I’ve made for this guy. The first paid are more of a cool weather type and these are for warmer times of the year. He’s got a couple of knives and his wife has one of Nichole’s Chap Leg Purses too.

Thanks guys for the Bday wishes. Its appreciated!

Very cool pic of that Coyote!

Finished off a new batch that is currently on the website. Already working on another batch right behind it. It's always kinda never ending treadmill because a guy really needs to have a bunch in different stages. Two new sheets of AEB-L arrived yesterday:

OzlL71A.jpg

When we were doing our impromptu lil handle material discussion several mentioned osage orange as a fav. So I took that advice and built one with osage and orange and dang if it wasn't the first to go.

I was digging around through my handle material boxes and found some nice cocobolo. I haven't used cocobolo for some years. Ever since it got listed in the CITES treaty. This prevented us from shipping it over seas. It was a hassle to have knives that you could ship and knives you couldn't ship so we moved away from that. I found just a couple lil pieces.

This one was in for a lil rehab. He needed a new sheath:

The owner kept wearing out the stitching and couldn't figure how he was doing it. Wearing out right at the tip and in a couple inches on the upper stitch line. Finally figured out he was rubbing on his welding table as he worked. So he wanted to have a different sheath for it,

Buddy from Arkansas used to call that Osage Orange -- Bodark. Said it was the perfect wood. Talked it up so much, we finally nicknamed him Colonel Bodark

Lots of people in Oklahoma pronounce it boardark or bordark
Its true name is Bois d’ arc I believe. It was used often for bows and I believe modern boyers still use it. My stash on this wood came from KS. A guy that use to be on here on BF had made up a knife and he’d sent it to me to check out and to offer any suggestions on it. It was a roundknife for leather work. He sent me a big box of scales of this wood from the posts of an old fence he was tearing down as a thanks for helping him with this knife. That was 12-15 years ago and I still have quite a bit of this material. I’ve also had a little bit sent to me by a bowyer. But David’s knife above use to be a fence post. I think its repurposed well!

Sure like the Mestano Dave. Got it yesterday. Thanks buddy 👍🤠

Great pic amigo! Thanks.

Yeah just down the road from us! That's cool, we'll have to set up a shop visit some time if ya want. Man I hope you're able to be inside for the next few, it's a scorcher!

I've never been to Saddleback. Seen the sign a bunch of times though.

Here's a little different one. A modified Cowboy Toothpick, well maybe we ought to call it a Cowgirl Toothpick:
