Fugawee as a certified master firearms trainer I always recommend a 4 inch 357. You can shoot 357 or cheaper 38 specials. you can not go wrong with a Ruger they are all way overbuilt. If you are dead set on a semi auto look at the 9 mm glock 19. It is a little smaller than the 17 and if you get a CCW very easyily concealable. With the right ammo they all have about a 93% one shot stop.It all boils down to shot placement.2 in their chest is way better than a loud miss.Just my 2 cents.

Right on Mike -

Fug - If you have 15 shots vs 8 - Er, You can do the statistical math

Fug- from my training/experience I'd go with a glock 17 if you don't plan on carrying it, or a glock 19 if you think concealed carry may be in your future. Either one will offer good performance with the correct ammo(speer gold dot) and will be cheap to plink with. They are both ultra-reliable and will be easy for you and your son to shoot. If it makes a difference, my everyday concealed carry gun is a glock 19.

I Glock 34 (longer barrel/slide 9mm) is next on my list. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think Fug has to worry about concealed carry for a while. The funny thing is the Illinois State Police support concealed carry, but no bill has even made it out for a vote. I live in the far NW burbs of Chicago and it surprise me of my neighbors mentality toward guns. One recently had an idea for invention for device that played the sound of a pump shotgun racking it's action. I didn't have the heart to tell him it has already been invented and that I own one, the Remington 870.

No it was a custom billet lower made by a canadian company. The last siz digits of the serial number are my birthday dates and there is a laser logo of my choice on the other side

Sort of like the Magpul lower but less coo.

Thanks for the help guys
I have been reading up on the Glocks
interesting note from one guy

"The police establishment is now properly devoted to the Glock, and this seems to be a good choice. The Glock is a difficult piece to shoot well, and its safety problem has been solved by issuing it with a trigger that only a gorilla would love, but it has been generally admitted that the police today cannot be trained to shoot well - not so much because of time and ammunition expenditures, but because of motivation. A man will do well only at things he enjoys doing, and today's police departments are reluctant to hire a recruit who enjoys shooting. Thus the Glock's "shootability" is irrelevant. The piece is relatively cheap, it is usually reliable, and the company's service policies are outstanding."

Haha,got a chuckle outta that.
He pushes the 1911 over the glock.
his whole comparison between the 2 can be read here

Fug the guy is full of it. I own a 1911 that is tricked out and it is a shooter. I shoot a Glock model 22 40 cal all the time and they group well at 50 and 75 yards. Check out youtube a guy called hickcock45 he shoots a model 27 making hits at 230 yards.Any one who says a Glock is not accurate don't shoot them enough.I have almost 20 years with a Glock and know how reliable they are.

fug- whoever wrote that is misinformed or stupid. our guys can carry whatever they want and 95% carry glocks of some flavor and believe me, they are all "shooters". I can also tell you with absolute certainty that when we do have a failure on the range, it is most often from that other 5%. you don't want a pistol built to super-tight tolerances to enable it to shoot quarters at 100yds, while sacrificing reliability. reason is, you will probably never be attacked by a quarter :) my glock goes bang EVERY time I pull the trigger and I have no problem hitting human size targets at 100yds. my glock doesnt care if its hot, cold, dirty, or shooting cheap ammo. it functions the same every time. don't get me wrong, there are other fine weapons out there, but for combat accuracy, ultimate reliabilty and ease of operation and maintenance, glock is a winner.

So a Glock is like the AK-47 of the handgun world? :)

I know there are some people who are "mine is the best and yours sucks"
who like to hear themselves speak.
The internet gives them a way to speak loudly.
I take it with a grain of salt.

I like that reliability test Jeremy,
gun got so hot it melted the retaining rod thing.

I am going to go to the gun store early next week and see
how a 19 and 17 fit in my hand.
Are there any options or upgrades I should be getting
right off the bat?

Fugawee look for a generation 4 Glock. They have a rough texture and they have diffrent size backstraps to customize your fit. All of my other glocks I end up putting Houge slip over grips for a better grip. I have very large hands so sometimes it will swim in my hands with out the rubber slip overs. And I agree with Rlarge 10 they go bang every time. My model 23 is my carry every where gun!

fug-the only options/upgrades you really need are night sights and a light. you should be able to buy one with night sights already installed. I also always tell people to put a light on their weapon if they plan to use it for home defense. you need to accurately ID your target before you blast it. here's a great deal(through the weekend only) on the light I run an all of my weapons http://www.ombexpress.com/p_FL779.aspx also get some good defense ammo, I use speer gold dot. I've seen it tested against just about every other defensive ammo out there and it out performs all of them. We have yearly ballistic testing wear we shoot through all sorts of mediums(heavy clothing, auto glass, etc) and into ballistic gel to test ammo performance and Gold Dot is great. You probably only need a box or two because you won't be using it for plinking, just for keeping around the home.

Rlarge10 I have speer gold dot and a lot of boxes of remengton golden saber 165 grain. How do the remengton compare? I was given 10 boxes of the remington. I also shoot blackhills 180 grain for my 40. The blackhills shoot realy good out of my Glock.
