The wife insisted that tomorrow we do something passive :grumpy:, so late in the day I headed out for a quick hike. It's pretty hot and humid around here now, it hit 101 degrees on the drive up. Such wussies around here, when I got to the parking lot, which usually has about 15 to 20 cars in it on the weekend, there were only 3.

I was pouring sweat as I climbed up through the Valley of Boulders to the top of one of the little mountains in the Green Pond Mountain range in Harriman State Park.

This is a very interesting area with lots of edible and useful plants.

And here is Green Pond, should probably be called Farm Pond. This picture shows about half of it. But I've been told there are lots fish in it.

Some nice natural shelter adjacent to the pond

Between the fish from the pond, the berries and other plants, and the natural shelter, this seems like it would be a decent spot to have to survive in.

I then made my way to Boston Mine

and then to the less impressive Garfield Mine

But at this point someone's tongue was seriously hanging down

and we headed to Island Pond for some of this

Here's the requisite knife porn, my trusty Barkie Aurora with his new buddy the B. Goode Recurve

The above picture is a little blurry perhaps because my helpful canine thought he saw a smudge on the lense and decided to clean it with his nose

The Mountain Laurel around the pond was just gorgeous

On a little bushwack heading home I ran across someone's shelter, looks like they used 2000 feet of paracord to construct it.

Thats has the potential to be a nice shelter, but wouldnt be worth all that paracord to make. I guess you know where to go should you ever run out though.

I had lunch on top of that overhang across from grren pond about 2 weeks ago Nice spot...Lotta fish...LOTTA red wing black birds

Thanks for the pictures theonew, I particularly was interested in the Mountain Laurel as I've never seen it in person. Where you are is probably about the northern-most range for it.

I have a copy of the flora and fauna for my area and I just checked it - there is no mention of it.

For those that don't know, Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latfolia) is a poisonous plant.

Mountain laurel honey is also toxic ! Those dead trees remind me of the recent fire in Minniwaska state park. I'll be seeing that damage for the first time this week. That fire took IIRC 3500 acres of beautiful forest because of the incompitant state DEC !!

So what is the name of your pup??? He stands there with that huge smile on his face.. He seemed to have a blast.. Sorry just miss hiking with my pup.. That pic touched me.

Excellent pictures. Didn't seem hot at all surfing your site from the comfort of my couch :) Those mountain laurel shot is very nice looking, captured the texture and pigments of the flowers very well.

His name is Richard. That was his shelter name but it stuck. He loves the outdoors as much as I do. Sorry for your loss, what was your pooch's name?

Hi Theonew His name is Amour ( love ) but i called him Amoure, he's a Doberman. He passed away in my arms from a heart attack 14 years ago.. He used to stand just like Richard does and look at me like this. Ready to go but waiting for me to get moving.

I can't remember who said this but I couldn't agree more. "If dogs don't go to heaven when they die, well then I want to go where they go". Dobies are great dogs and you were there for him till the very end.
