How’s the Magnacut compare to 3V? And also apples.

Maybe it's just in my head then? It's always seemed like the magnacut burr is more stubborn than a 3v burr.

I didn't mean to imply magnacut is difficult to sharpen. I hope I didn't say that anywhere in my sleep deprived state.

When using diamond stones, I haven't really encountered a steel that I would say is difficult to sharpen. The magnacut I've encountered definitely doesn't fit that bill. I just prefer the way 3v (and cruwear) sharpens versus the way magnacut does. It's a pretty minor difference and I would only take it into account if I were being very particular in an effort to narrow down my selection pool.

Since I don't need much corrosion resistance, it doesn't factor very heavily for me. With that in mind, the differences between magnacut, 3v, and cruwear for the casual knife user probably won't be very noticeable in a quality blade. That's just my opinion though.

Not denying your experience at all, man. If you’re dealing with a stubborn burr, I’m sure it’s real. My point was that it shouldn’t be that way, if everything was done right. Could be heat treat, could be overheated edge. I can’t speak for anyone else’s process, but I can tell you that I don’t experience that with my knives. I’m guessing something was missed on yours, or the makers or manufacturers aren’t addressing the details. The alloy isn’t the issue, and your experiences with Cruwear and CPM-3V likely just demonstrate good heat treat and manufacturing hygiene where it was perhaps missed for your example of Magnacut.

In fact, if there’s one thing I can tell you, it’s the exception not the rule for heat treat to be done well.

Crucible Industries, home of CPM-Cruwear, CPM-3V, and CPM-Magnacut, in relation to Cortland, unequivocally the best apples.

Coincidence?

I think not.

Granny Smith is where it's at. Always was my favorite. A little sprinkle of cinnamon on them makes a great snack

I've only had two knives that I made for a relatives that was in MC. Both took a wicked sharp edge with minimal to no bur. 3V has always been harder to sharpen. Maybe I got a bad heat treatment but it's always felt mushy and didn't take an edge as well. Then it lost it keenness fast. But did hold a serviceable edge for a while. I requested D3V protocol but I don't think it was done. I think it was left a little on the soft side

The MC was perfect. Jerred did the HT and looked like he nailed it. So I think heat treatment will be the biggest difference between these two options

Oh, and for Granny Smith, the more tart the better 😛
