How are you preparing for Irene?

What's a "hurricane?" (I live over a mile high in Colorado.)

My thoughts are with all of you guys. Hope you weather the storm just fine. I'm sure you will.

I wish all of y'all luck!!! I grew up on the Mississippi Coast, so we're no stranger to hurricanes. We lost most of our things during Katrina and it wasn't fun. Main things we stocked up on was water, flashlights, lighters, canned food, gas, ammo, etc. Our water ran out and our pump didn't work, since we had no power, so we went to the creek and started bringing home 5 gallon buckets of water to boil. We ended up killing several of our chickens for meat. We had plenty of vegetables from our garden that we had canned. We ended up being without power for a month and half. No telephone for 8 months. We lost part of our home, our studio, and many trees. And many had it worse than us!!! Thankfully Irene won't be like Katrina. Make sure you have a LOT of beer or whiskey on hand!!!!

well.

there's this hurricane coming up the east coast. nice.

for my area? not so big a deal one would guess, yet most of the stores are out of water, batteries, flashlights, lanterns, coolers, cheap wine, various canned food, and other such things.

wow. you'd think they'd be prepping for Y2K or worse.

me? filled the car with gas, cuz it was empty. bought some supplies i was planning on buying anyway. including cheap wine :>

got some anti-looting supplies

later, i'll get out some Beckers. probably choppy stuff. because even though ASPLUNH corp already took many trees down, all summer, prepping for winter (forward thinking!), well... more could be done. i think we're in pretty good shape, actually.

Blizzards. Oh yeah, we get those alright. Avalanches, too.

So you plan on spending the weekend at Jones Beach? Big Mike

I was thinking about that, wait a minute... Now the news is saying Hurricane again! I remember there were morons heading to the beach just before the last hurricane that hit here back in '85 (and that was a Cat 2)!!!

In all seriousness, either way you need to be ready for it. I'm not expecting much, but preparing for the worst.

Whether you think its going to be a BS tropical storm or a Cat 2, be ready.

I am not expecting any direct hurricane damage, but the power will definitely go out for awhile. Heck, if someone sneezes around here, the power goes out. I am I bit worried about the storm spawning tornadoes though.

Here's the satellite photo. This should update itself automatically as the day goes on.

We had a tornadoe hit the ridge I live on a few months back, the street was impassable for two days and the power was out for five, hopefully Irene will not be as bad.

The size of the storm and amount of rain it produces will most likely be the main concern for NY, NJ, and CT

Our ground is already pretty saturated from the recent rain we've had. This slow moving storm has potential to dump a lot of rain our way, add the storm surge, and a very high tide that we are already expecting will cause some severe flooding. In Fairfield County they are closing many many flood prone roadways, and even the Merrit PKWY. More do the risk of falling trees which is the norm on the Merrit...

Foilist, if you have a garage or shed you are better off storing the patio furniture in there. Securing it outdoors doesn't always work.

On the ride to work today, I noticed a bunch of homes that still have all their lawn decorations out, as well as a few of those for sale signs that are just stuck in the ground. Dumbasses....

All of our outdoors stuff is in the basement and garage. I noticed another rotten tree, but it is too far to hit anything. I pretty much live in the woods, so I hope the nearest trees are strong enough to stay where they are.

Part of my commute involves the Wilbur Cross Pkwy/Merritt, and it does flood very easily in several areas. I wonder how long the cleanup will take?

Another thing I wonder about is all the folks stocking up on batteries, candles, and . . . MILK. Um . . ?

. . . MILK. Um . . ?

Yeah, the bread and milk morons are out in full force. Like theres nothing else to eat besides bread in a hurricane, and... milk goes bad without the frig. Morons.

When Gloria hit it was the worst since the '38 Hurricane. Power took two weeks. Cleanup took a few days, except for the houses out on Dune Rd in Westhampton. There was nothing to cleanup, all the houses, the road, and even that stretch of Fire Island was gone. But I don't expect this one to be quite as bad.

All that build up and excitement for that??? WTF?? Now I know what the first girl I slept with felt like...

:D
