How awesome is the Swick??

The Swick arrived and I have to say I'm very impressed for the money.

I've experimented with neck knives before. I had a Tom Krein custom Cicada that was very light and came with a wonderfully designed kydex sheath, but the blade was a little too small for any kind of use beyond basic EDC tasks. I also had a custom Horton necker that was far too heavy, far too obtuse, came with a crappy sheath, and was so poorly finished I had a hard time understanding the hype around it.

This is hands-down better that both of those combined. Well machined, well finished, good retention on the sheath. I haven't been able to shake mine loose from the factory sheath. I don't think I would go any heavier or larger than the Swick for neck carry but I think it will be able to handle itself well as a primary blade, not just a back up.

As I get more carry time and use from this guy I'll update the thread with my thoughts.

You put handle scales on it yet? Mine didn't fully "click" for me until i had handles on it.

Yep. I have the Halpern scales and it is very comfortable. It definitely feels like a full size knife.

I was actually able to shake it loose from the sheath after testing it's retention again. But it did take a considerable effort.

I've been trying to carry it as much as possible to get a feel for it. And after some carry time it does feel much lighter than when I first got it. That only makes sense.

Hopefully more observations to come.

Surfinggringo, just out of curiosity, what kind of kayak do you use? I am about to get a new kayak but I haven't completely made up my mind yet on which one to get.

Hi Jake, I use the Hobie pedal kayaks. More expensive but they are the only way to go for fishing. :)

I have looked at those, very nice kayaks. I think im probably going to go with a Tarpon 100 or 120, as im still somewhat new to kayaking. I would like to get into kayak fishing soon also.

My last update on the Swick 4.

I sold it.

But not because it was a bad knife by any means. I had the opportunity to purchase something else I've been looking for at a great deal so I jumped on it.

I was able to squeeze quite a bit of use in on this sucker while I had it though.

I agree with SurfGringo that the edge is entirely to thick. Being such a short blade, I think a thinner edge would have performed better and wouldn't have hampered its self defense capabilities at all. The stock is plenty thick for that. As is, the thing is a real horse. You can definitely pound on it.

The swedges are very small and subtle and have the effect of almost rounding the spine, much like a Sebenza. That's a detailed I enjoyed very much. No cut corners by any means.

In the end, I think the design was spot on, executed well, but a little too thick and heavy.

Well done Spyderco [emoji106]🏻
