how big is the knife community?

By using my own experience, based on how many people I know (Facebook friends?) and counting how many of them are actively interested in knives, I'd say it is definitely less than 1%. It's probably skewed even more, as I've made friends precisely BECAUSE I like knives, based on finding folks with similar interests at shows or online. I'd be willing to bet we are fewer in number than NRA members, and gun owners in general. Probably not by too much, though.

Does anyone have statistics on NRA membership? That might be a good place to start, if looking for hard numbers.

Also providing knives as gifts to the younger generation when appropriate furthers our hobby.

This is the key to our future. Start them young and teach them how to be responsible knife owners/users and collectors.

Has anyone ever noticed that quite often that there more guests on line than BF members.......

Why don't the "guests" join BF and do most of the things that BF members can do ???

they might just be lookin around. or dont want to hassle with it if they dont have any questions or already found the answer to what they were lookin for. I know I creeped on here for about 5 months before actually signing up. its just how quickly people want to warm up to an online forum.

These are stats off just this site.

Im curious...What constitutes an "active" member? How many times must a person post and within what timeframe to be classified as an active member? And when does that member become inactive?

Any administrators know this?

Just to put a bit of perspective on these numbers ... the number of members include duplicate accounts, troll accounts, accounts with minimal posts. December 11, Spark posted Busiest night ever. "2454 people online as of a minute or two ago. Busiest night we've ever had. Woot!"

With 9,407,100 posts and 754,842 threads, we get 13 posts per thread, on average.
With 9,407,100 posts and 61,223 posts by the top poster, if everyone posted that much, it would only take 154 of us.

Get busy, guys & gals! :p

There are 32,345,789 people in the knife community.

IMO everyone outside of mental institutions and maximum security prisons is in the knife community. The question is how much they value their membership.

The numbers may be far higher given how quiet many knife lovers are. I would use a multiplier of 4 times the present population guestimate

Just to get a different point of view, I asked a litle kid "how big is the knife community?" and he told me: SOOO BIG!

how big is the knife enthusiast community? i know everyone owns kitchen knives, but what about pocket knives? not much else to the question i guess lol. i know we have to be pretty big, albeit close knit.

I presume, within the United States alone, significantly larger than the firearms community, which is huge (80-100 million folks, IIRC). I had pocket knives before I owned guns. I imagine that goes for most people, and not just kids.

Worldwide, due to firearms owner control laws, probably double the number of firearms owners.

Of course, I'm defining "knife enthusiast" as "knife owner." Those of us who participate in online fora such as these is a tiny fraction of overall ownership. Same as with guns...or coins...or stamps...

BAH. newer generations no nothing of the horrors of buying knives in stores, at prices hiked up higher then the shop owners pants no less

I take a "knife enthusiast" to be someone who owns at least a dozen knives beyond what they have in the kitchen. I know a potload of fellas who carry a pocket knife of one sort or another, but whom I would not consider knife enthusiasts.

For that matter, I don't consider every BF member to be a "knife enthusiast". Some are just passing through looking for information or are passing through a "phase". And there is a fair amount of overlap between BF membership and that of other knife sites.

I'd hazard a guess that, if you took the BF membership and roughly doubled it, you would be in the ballpart, Say ~half a million dedicated knife enthusiasts who own at least a couple of dozen knives.
