How big is the police 4 lightweight?

It’s massive. Like a folding steak knife.
That's a pretty good analogy, I measured up a steak knife I have of similar size and though I think I would personally love carrying a folding steak knife around, I think it most likely look strange even to those I hang around. To buy anyways? 🤔
Personally, it looks to me like the blade had a quarter-inch snapped off and the tip "repaired" by an amatuer with a bench grinder.
Kind of my thoughts too, I've never snapped a tip before and that includes owning a Kershaw leek and would prefer Spyderco to let me have the option to snap my own tip if I ever do haha

I think 3” of cutting edge is all most people really need. The rest is a luxury. The longer the blade, the longer it is in the pocket as well. If you’re around people that are intimidated by large pocketknives, the police or military are definitely going to get noticed. I’ve had an endura, still too large. I like the endela because it’s in the middle of the Delica and endura. I like the straight spine stretch lw most, because it seems like an FRN pm2 to me. Lots of options, but the police model is a knife that means business and it lets everyone in the room know it when you whip out that blade.

That's impressive. Did it ever develop any blade play after all those years?

Nope but admittedly I never "used" it much but it still remains one of the few "users" in my collection.

I never collected or used any Enduras after Gen 1, so I cannot comment on your other question about Gen 3 vs Gen 4.

Here is a P4LW compared in size to, in normal descent, a cat, a Buck 110 LW, and a 91mm SAK.
One of the largest knives that I feel comfortable taking out and using in public - due to a few things, but color and blade shape help. Highly prefer it to the Endura, I enjoy the 4" of blade and the large handle. I sometimes carry just the P4, a SAK, and a cat.

The Police models have been my main EDC carry’s for the last 15+ years. Starting with the Stainless, then the Police 2 G10 (my overall favorite carry knife of all times) which I lost both😡. Main has been the Police 3 model for I want to say the last decade and recently acquired a Police 4 due to the tip profile, somewhat similar my old Police 2. The 4 is a little bigger and definitely wider than the 3. It personally doesn’t bother me how deep it goes into my pocket, it’s the overall handle with that becomes a bit of an issue for me.

While the Police is big, it just works well all around for me. The Native Chief as stated is a little smaller but still a pretty big knife. I don’t have an Endura for comparison. Top down pics

The Police 4 is definitely a large knife, the longest folder I have. But it carries good for its size. I like that it has such thin stock, and the K390 really has impressed me for a mega carbide steel in a thin, long blade. I had mine reground to an edge around .008”-.009” and had the spine flattened to get the classic splinter picker tip.

That looks great! I was extremely heartbroken when I lost my Police 2. I went to buy another and only the Police 3 was available. I didn’t care for how it had the drop tip to reinforce and snubby. That’s why I picked up the Native Chief.

Are you Krein regrind or is it just work you had done on it? Curious what the cost was for that mod?

I had a Police 3 for a while, but I didn’t like at all how the tip had such a large drop added to it. All the previous models had that perfect splinter picker tip (that unsuspecting people can break off, hence the drop added to the Police 3), so I didn’t like that. I also had Tom Krein regrind that one to make it thinner and pointier, but to me I generally like a little more belly to the blade and I ended up selling it.

The Police 4 on the other hand added significant belly to the edge, a much less dropped tip, and K390 which I had never tried before. I’ve really liked this knife from day one all around, including the ergonomics. I’m a nut for thin edges though since I really value performance over durability, so I was able to convince Tom to help me out and regrind the Police 4 recently. He’s done probably. 35-45 over the last 17 or so years for me. He’s so in demand for his great customs though that he is very selective on how many, and which particular knives he will regrind these days so I don’t ask often. If you PM me I can give you a little more information if you want. Tom is really good at grinding to very thin edges without overheating the steel and impacting the heat treat. I know that K390 is a belt killer, so the regrinds are probably more than you you would think. I know there are knifemakers offering their services for regrinds and can do a fine job. As long as you look for others that have actually used their knives after the regrinds and are happy with the steel’s edge performance then you can be pretty sure you will be happy with the results of any particular knifemaker.

I hear that, that splinter tip was a great shape. I don’t know why someone would use a thin sharp tip as a pry tool and be surprised when they break it. Spyderco ruined that design because of others carelessness apparently lol.

Thanks for the info. Mine is VG10 but has treated me good. Quick and easy to sharpen hair shaving sharp on a steel with a few strokes. Yours’ looks like a perfect blade shape, nice one!

Ive had a K390 Serrated for a month or so. Found a dealer that has a plain edge for $131.

Big ole girl sister on the way

Im not sure if Im allowed to post the dealer. I was going to private message you but I dont see that option?
Oh might be because I don't have a paid membership to this forum so I can't send or receive messages. Don't see the harm in saying where you bought something from though?

Well I took the plunge and it arrived today. It is definitely a long sucker. I'm not sure if I'm too embarrassed to carry it yet. Here's my comparison next to my ZT0200 and some American currency for another size reference. I don't carry the ZT enough because it's big and heavy but also wide and chunky and raised some eyebrows before. But even though the Police has the same amount of cutting edge and quite a bit more handle/ area to hold on to it, it still really carries all too well. Half the weight of the ZT and literally doesn't feel much different than an endura in my pocket. When using the choil it does help make it seem smaller when using in front of people, and the way the grip is for me it begs to be choked up on this way. I don't know guys I might have to keep it...

I wish Spyderco made an even bigger model than the Police with the same thin blade stock. That would be awesome.
