How can I be assured I am buying a new Civilian with the thicker tip?

There, you have it from THE MAN, himself. Does that satisfy you?
Sal was clearly being sarcastic and insulting. I really wish everybody would just help the guy out. He asked a simple question.

Hi J8,

There was no intent to be sarcastic or insulting. Sorry if anyone took it that way.

We are still using the same mold for the Civvie that we began with. Each knife is gound by hand so there will be slight individual differences, but there was never a design change in the thickness of the tip.

Maybe you are more than just a Troll, but "J85909266" your comments about Sal are about as off base as one can get.

He has never been more than a complete professional regarding this board, his company and his products.

Get a clue before speaking, oh I forgot TROLL ! ! !

I regret it if my earlier post caused any misunderstandings. In earlier posts there were comments that I had posted a rumor about the Civilian tip. Actually I had asked a question, which is quoted below.

"In a recent posting on Ebay, a seller stated that the Civilian has been redesigned with a new, somewhat thicker tip for strength. I can't seem to find a reference to this elsewhere, however. Is this true or might it be a misunderstanding on the part of the seller? Thanks in advance for any information."

I hadn't stated this was true, but was trying to find out if the seller had access to information I haven't seen. Prior to asking the question I ran a search on Bladeforums and the Spyderco forum and was not able to find anything. If anything, I was trying to engage in some rumor control for myself. I regret if the earlier post was taken by any as a statement of fact.

Actually, I own four Civilians and still kick myself for letting my plain-edged tuffram go a few years ago. It's a great design and I want to buy any new versions if they ever do come out.

I also want to thank Sal for laying this to rest. I now know I don't need to keep my eye out for references in the next catalog. Now I just have to track down the flat ground Chinook II when it hits the streets.

J8 - etc

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that this was just an attempt at "sarcastic" humor on your part. If that is the case, the responses you got should indicate to you that it failed. The next action is up to you.

I thought that I picked up J8-----'s attempt at sarcasm fairly easily. Sarcasm is a challenging form of humor to convey through type, anyhow. I'm guessing that this was just a miscommunication.

Haha I read it as sarcasm too! So many ways to read someone's post. ;)

Thats the same way I felt. I use sarcastic humor along these same lines A LOT in my real world interactions, and sometimes it's not very well received, or should I say perceived most times.

Yes, I'm relieved to know that I don't have to run out and find a new variant of the Civi for my collection (for now)...

I too, have used sarcasm in forums and may have been misinterpreted as hostile. I regret when this happens, but since I'm a fairly dry-witted sort in speech, it doesn't filter well in this medium (aptly observed, Blondie...).

Well .... not to fuel the fire, but there really were 100 experimental Civies released to law enforcement with a heavy duty tip. Half were engraved with the agency name and half had sterile blades.

No Sal wasn't sarcastic, it's just how Sal responds. If you go to the Spyderco forum, or do a search here you will notice that Mr Glesser is a man of few words. He is one of the few owners and top designers who actually takes time to answer questions about his products. When he does so it's usually "to the point". NO bs, just the plain facts.

I really don't think Sal has any intention to be sarcastic to anyone, the fact that he even responded after beeing insulted is a sign that the man is honourable.
He is also highly regarded within the knife community and with his customers.

I'm sorry, Sal. I was just being sarcastic and mocking how the guy was acting towards the other members earlier in the thread. I didn't intend to come of offensive to you, I was just being witty. Again, I'm sorry it was misunderstood.
