How Could This Happen?

It could be called another success story in deconstructing the North American social structure.

If that's too abstract, then maybe political correctness, judicial activism, racial bigotry, media opportunism, all combined with a touch of ignorance, corruption, and stupidity will help understanding.

But Hey looking on the brighter side we got some relief from Iraq,Syria,Lebanon, oil prices, and hollywood.   :D

I was a few blocks away when it happened. Our building went on lockdown for a few hours. I'm glad it's over.

Well, there's seven people dead in Wisconsin, isn't there? The church shoot out?

The mildly interesting thing about the Atlanta debacle is it was a 50 year old, 100 pound female officer watching a 200 pound, 33 year male old prisoner.

The media has carefully avoided the question of whether or not this 100 pound person should be an officer. That's verbotten. But we are going to talk about holsters- how well they lock and hold the arm- and about paying for other officers- there should have been more guards.

Since money is no object, we should pay for 8 or 10 hundred pound female officers vs 2 or 3 170 to 210 pound male officers.

Sloppy math on my part? Sure. Almost as sloppy as lowering the physical requirements for the job.

This is one taboo topic.
I do agree there is a place for women in LE. In some cases, they should not be given certain positions, and their pay should reflect their limits.

But so much of life is not the way it is, it's the way we think it oughta be.
We codify these beliefs. Simply amazing.

Lest I be attacked for being a barbarian, let me say; it's fine with me. The Emperor has lost his clothes for so many years...well, it's not clear if He ever had them on right in the first place.

Watching the scene caused me to ax mysef:

Why were there few to no white deputies on the Fulton County Courthouse detail?

How many successful cases for white PO--lice brutality against blacks have been brought against Fulton County?

Is Fulton County predominantly a black community?

Are the Fulton County Leaders white?

Why did Nichols only kill whites unless confronted by a black?

I just don't understand????????? :(

I understand what you are saying Munk, a single 100 lbs female escorting someone more than twice her size? But wasn't there a second deputy who got shot?

Since I wasn't there, it's hard to comment but I am going to ask a hard question.

Was the deputy paying attention? Was the deputy taking full precaution?

Now if I were walking closely behind or right next to a physically superior criminal who wasn't shackled, the potential for bad things could happen quite easily.

I really don't know what kind of court precautions are taken but it seems like this was an accident just waiting to happen. Why does the tragedy have to happen before we learn?

If there were racial factors involved in the murders I missed them. He seems to have killed those who were in his way.

I'm sure there are many racial actions left uncovered by the
media. This would be good except that white racism is not left uncovered, which helps perpetrate the other racism.

I don't think the Atlanta courtroom murders were about race, though.

Too bad the guy just didn't do his time for the rape charge.

You know, Dave, they're will be a rucus about the holster- old tecnology- easier for a bad guy to grab the weapon, and about guard to prisoner ratio, maybe even about the presence of a loaded firearm; the media was going on about that last night. But after all is said and done, prisoners will still kill guards and judges.

I feel impelled to mention this- by all reports, the female officer was a good person.

I was sad to watch this on the news.

>>>>>>>>>>>

The cable news wouldn't let up about it though, and by the time I went to sleep Friday night, I'd secured all my weapons. Well, they said he could be anywhere....

Saw on the news that the last person killed was an armed U.S. Customs officer. And his gun and shield was taken after he was down.

I wonder what the anti-gunners have to say about this incident? Oh yes - guns are BAD, BAD, BAD. Everybody(law enforcement and military excepted) turn in your guns. I'm just sorry that a ordinary citizen(NRA member) didn't take this guy down and save the lawyer fees.

The killer was a real bad guy - a genuine "Leroy Brown." They caught him with shanks in his shoes before this happened. He didn't need a male guard, he needed a cage with a dozen male guards.
A single guard could not have handled this guy, according to news reports.
None of this should have happended. When you catch a prisoner with knives in his shoes, that should tell you that you need extra precautions - like heavy chains and a straight jacket.

I'm no expert, but have had much contact with Corrections in my former life as a counselor, and this oversight makes me wonder if Clearblue's race questions weren't an issue at some procedural level in Atlanta- to not treat a prisoner in such a way to allow the Institution be percieved as racist. Hence, no chains or security measures after a shank was discovered.

IN both the acute psych units and the chronic care of the criminally insane- if a patient was found with a shank his hands were strapped to a belt around his waist, or put down on a bed in full restraint. If they had to walk they had ankles and wrists bound, or were even tied to a mobile chair.

Is it possible that "Silence of the Lambs" could have been a training film for Nichols?

Was he trying to out "Hannibal" Anthony Hopkins?

How do you make a knife from a doorknob?

Remove one knob. Sharpen one end of square shaft that formerly connected the two knobs by rubbing on concrete. Retain one knob on the other end as handle for "push dagger."

My son is an LEO. Three times he has had to "assist" after a diminutive fellow officer has been overcome by a prisoner. He left that deaprtment.

Our county court house and jail are one complex. Prisoners are moved from cells to court rooms via separate, vidoe-monitored passages that can be opened to public areas only with codes. Not foolproof, but it helps.

Wow. Prisoners are so creative.

Jeb, I'm not a prisoner, not yet, anyway, and I knew about the door knob. Jeb, have you ever taken one apart?

munk

I've taken one apart, but I didn't think of using the knob as a push dagger because the article said he carried one in each shoe.

For some reason I was imagining using the curved brass sheeting. Then it would conform to the arch of the foot and be less noticeable. Like certain types of WWII OSS knives.

How'd it happen?

REALLY poor protocol and a "law" prohibiting restraints when a prisoner appears in front of a jury, possibly combined with budget limitations on court officer staffing.

One guard, of any stature, was not enough in this situation.

The FOX link ends with some person saying "it ended in the best possible way."
(That is, with the person surrendering.) I beg to differ.

I can envision a more expedient ending, and one which would have been MUCH less expensive for both the court system and whatever funding agency providing counsel to indigent accused.

Be well and safe.
