How did you become a knife knut?

I think most of us were born as a knifenuts. There are different evens made us to realize this. I beleive that most of the men are knifenuts, they just do not know about this yet and some of them never will.

I honestly think I was born that way. Ever since I can remember I have loved knives. When I was just little I would get scrap wood and build swords, knives, and tomahawks.

Same here. Like Dave Chappelle said about chicken and watermelon... there's nothing wrong with liking knives. If you don't like knives, there's something wrong with YOU! :D

I lived on Navy bases growing up, so I could pick up Bucks for pretty cheap way back then.

I think the first good one I got was a Stockman (301). Even at around 12 years old, I appreciated the precision with which it was put together. The way it clacked shut and snapped open.

I probably don't qualify as a nut yet, as my inventory is only about 7, but there is something satisfying about opening and using a well-made knife that reaches the inner caveman in all of us. Looking forward to receiving my BM Presidio this week, it's going to be my EDC, and first GOOD knife since the 301.

I blame AG Russell. The purchase of his Sting, back in 1977, got the ball rolling.

I became a knife nut after watching cutlerylovers and nutnfancy youtube

vids, then joining this forum.

Ended up buying 4 knives in one day. ;)

The first thing my wife ever bought me was a SOG Paratool (she got it for me for my birthday after we had started dating) and it spiralled from there. So I guess it really is her fault.

I found a pocketknife when I was around 4 or 5 years old. From that point on it seemed like there was always a pocket knife for whittling or playing mumbly peg (sp?). As I got older and could afford to buy a decent knife I bought my first Case.....a stockman pattern about 3 1/2 inches closed. I think the quality of Case knives got me started collecting somewhat seriously. Today I buy what I like as far as brand or styles go as long as the other bills get paid! It's just one of those hobbies that it doesn't matter how little or how much money you spend, everyone that wants to collect and enjoy knives can find what they want in their budget. Keep on collecting knives!!!! ......From another Knife Knut for life!!!!

I collected a little bit when I was in high school, but firearms took most of my attention (and money) I moved to Okinawa, and couldn't have any firearms out here, so... I did the next best thing I started collecting knives!

I always liked balisongs and when I got my first quality folder about a year ago, my knife interests expanded. It was Lone Wolf Harsey Tactical T2 and it became my all time favorite. Then - although I had found them kind of ugly first - I got my first Spydies, which grew to my heart :)

Mine was by watching old Tarzan films from the 30's and 40's with Johnny Weismueller (sp?) and I was hooked as a kid, first with plastic toy knives I would in my waist belt like Tarzan and when I played in a local creek with a friend, with vines we actually swung on, and broke. I was living my Tarzan dreams. Then my dad bought me my first real knife which I still have, an Imperial/Frontier wood handled lockback. It means alot to me now since my father passed away in January of this year. My first real big knife was a Kabar I bought in college days. I have collected what I like, and traded, etc ever since. My wife actually bought me a old stag Kissing Crane stockman back in Christmas 2007. One thing, some tastes change or new interests emerge as I get older, so I consider myself a new collector (though getting new insight and experience) everytime I see something that makes me take notice......not necessarily buying all the time. So enjoy, it does not get dull! Pun not intended! Also, I found my first true knife catalogs from Cutlery Shoppe and Smokey Mountain Knife works.

When I was 12 in 1983 or so, I saw a display of SAKs in a tourist trap shop on Mackinac Island, MI during a vacation. I had no money, but I kept going back to the shop and drooling over the display, looking at all the models and thinking of which one would be ideal. After much thinking/daydreaming, I decided on the Huntsman.

Months later, I had saved up some money and went to the military surplus store in Lansing and got my Huntsman! I carried it exclusively up until about nine years ago, and I still have it. It shows a lot of use, but is still perfectly functional. I have liked knives all that time, but had few (no money). It wasn't until about 2002 or so that I became a knut in the sense that I began to become much more informed about knives and started accumulating them This happened after logging on here for some advice on fixed blades.

I was learning to shave with a straight razor. Then someone praised the quality of their Mcusta knife. I checked it out and started digging into the subject....still digging I guess.

Still wanting that MCusta as well.

My grandfather worked out of our house. Woodworking, carpentry, cabinet making and such. He always carried a pocket knife and you can imagine me as a wide eyed 5 year old hawking everything he did in the shop. Nothing captivated me more than that little knife and he used it for everything. In about '70 or '71 I joined the cub scouts and my parents gave me the blue cub scout knife. I've had a folding knife on me ever since.

I'm not sure how it started for me. I remember getting a couple different pocket knives when I was younger, but I never really cared for them and they usually ended up getting lost. I guess I started carrying a knife regularly once I was able to wander around the woods by myself. That's when I started seeing how handy it was to have a knife on your person.

I always liked gadget and stuff like that, but my brother got a blue Vicotrinox SAK when he were both young and he liked it but he cut himself and didnt want to touch it after that so I took it! And then I just collected what ever I could find for a cheap price, but about 2 years ago on another random forum that has nothing to do with knives they started showing off their EDC's, and I noticed alot of them had pocket Knives so then I got in the market for a assisted knife so I got a SOG Twitch II and now I own about $3000.00 worth of knives lol.

Sounds like you are a certified Knife Knut!!!!!

Naw, you're not a "certified knife knut" until you have individual knives that are worth $3,000. But that's well on the way. :)

I blame the United States military for my addiction.

When I was younger (about 13) Pop would take me to gun shows. I wasn't allowed to handle the guns, but most of the knife guys didn't mind if I picked them up and checked them out. It was the beginning of the end. I bought some cheapos with money I saved up and even then I knew what I was buying was crap. One day one of the dealers showed me a small knife with a partially serrated blade, aluminum handle, liner lock, and a little rubber insert for grip. I loved it and bought it. It was more expensive than any other knife I had bought up until that point. It was a Kershaw liner lock, a small one. After that I bought a Spyderco Delica and Police model and then I got into Benchmades.

I stopped collecting for a while as other things started to peak my interest. About two years ago I was thinking I really wanted to get something that I was never able to get as a kid. I wanted an OTF automatic knife. I started by buying a POS Tombraider knife. TERRIBLE!! I said to myself then that if I was going to buy a knife it was going to be quality. After much research and searching I found a Microtech Troodon for a great price that was brand new. Once I received it I couldn't bring myself to use it so now I needed a user OTF. Once I found one of those I got more into Microtech and started buying a bunch of them. I remembered that Kershaw that I bought as my first "real" knife and started getting collecting them as well. Well you should all know how this story goes. Now I have drawers upon drawers full of knives that will never be used. I also have my nightstand full of all my users.... about 60 of them. If I tried to figure how much I've spent on knives in these past two years my head would probably explode.

Maybe I have a problem? Naaaaah!
