Im trading my sebenza with someone in vermont and i live in pa. How can i set up a trade using the mail or ups etc... so that neither one of us gets screwed. Any ideas????

Check reputation first. A trade over the net has inherent risks.
Part of knife collecting is an adherence to standards that take on the fact that reputation is everything.

Get in touch with the other party and come to an agreement that if one of you are not happy the deal is off and everyone gets what they started with back. Communication is key as is up front agreements about approving knives and making sure both of you are happy. Check the forums especially this one (GB&U) to see if there have been problems. Look in the hall of shame too. Check addresses posted there.

I have sold some expensive knives of late. When the person has a solid reputation the knives have been on the way to them before payment came to me.

Once you do your homework you should be OK, but when you are not dealing person to person there is no way a deal can be 100% safe unless both parties care more about their reputation than the deal. Thankfully most "knife" people adhere to that thought.

I agree with Bastid (about trading I‘m not so sure about the goat thing:p). Reputation and integrity is very important.

At the moment you don’t have any feedback so don’t take it as an insult if your asked to ship first in a trade they’re just covering there own bases. The flip side to that is since you are shipping first it would behoove you to make your first few trades with someone who is already well established with positive feedback.

So if I were to give you some advice I would tell you to remember that a knife is never more important then your reputation. Always be completely honest.

Always check feedback.

Use good communication, when your in the middle of a deal check your email often. Usually once me and another member make a deal and get it rolling I’ll give them my cell number (often times a 3 minute phone call is worth more then 15 emails). The times in which I’ve forgotten to give my cell number have often been the times in which I really wished I had. Cause communication is key.

We’re a relatively small community and we take care of our own. When a member gets screwed in a trade it hurts all of us.

When trading knives, I first look at the seller, for ex. if one of the mods here wanted to trade with me, and they have good feedback, I would ship first, or we would ship at the same time. If I was trading with someone with 30 posts, no feedback, they would have to ship me their end of the deal, and I would wait for it to arrive before sending mine out.

I can't really add much that Bastid didn't cover.
I recently did a trade with a member who had no feedback. When I explained that I was uncomfortable sending mine until I got his, he was understanding, and even took the time to call me...
The whole transaction was flawless, and I made sure that the feedback I left for him showed just that.

A persons word is everything. Don't be offended if you trade with someone who has established feedback and they want you to send yours first...

Your Sebenza represents a fair amount of coin, so spend the time researching, and do whatever it takes until you are comfortable with it.

The first one is a little hard, but after that it becomes much easier

Spend the extra few bucks to get tracking and full insurance on your shipment. Better to have it and not need it, etc., etc.
