How do I keep rabbits out of my yard?

Rabbit controlling devices: Blowgun, throwing stick, sling shot, snares, box trap, and my favorite,

Nice ideas fellas - I just got back from Tractor Supply and picked up a plastic owl for $10. It actually look pretty good... for now...

I'll put it up tonight and see what happens. Hopefully the other birds that come to eat out of my bird feeders will get used to seeing a fake owl and still come for the bird food. I'm hoping the rabbits are not as bright.

If that doesn't work I'll have to try plan B... Whatever that is :)

TS had a little knife display, they had some pretty cool Tractor Supply Case branded knives, they were pretty cool looking. I didn't buy one though :(

Since I was out I went and bought a new weed wacker - maybe that'll be plan B :)

I have a more friendly way.. but if your rabbits are the size of the one illustrated on page 1, I second IED's or landmines.

When I was younger my dad would spray some lime juice on the bottom outerside of the fence.. to keep rodents out.. and it worked very well.. we would see squirrels, raccoons, pull up to the fence and just turn around, something about the smell being too strong and it burns their naustrils.

I still use this trick today, but instead I cut thin slices of lime and put them in my flower pots, to keep the neighbor's cat at bay.

Even if they are tied up. If a rabbit gets in the yard I know about it

How bout teaching your dog not to eat rabbit poop? Not a difficult task...

You guys are quick to talking about getting rid of the rabbits... putting up chicken wire, shooting, snaring, etc... IMO the rabbit is not the problem. Not that your dog IS a problem, but rather HAS a problem. Dogs are smart.... well, for the most part. I have two.

there is soem product i have heard of, its intended use is that you put some in your dogs food and it makes their poo inedible, so they wont eat their own poo. however, maybe you could get some of this stuff, put out some carrots and such for the rabbits and sprinkel some of this product on top.

Agreed, but it's much more fun to talk about how to get rid of rabbits

Training the dog shouldn't be all that hard - she's a lab so she learns pretty easily. It's a little tough to find time to spend with the pup outside training her to not eat poop when I've got a 7 month old in the house and my wife works weekends. There's a little more to my situation than I let on in the OP.

I've got a fair sized garden in my yard too that I keep the rabbits out of. We've got A LOT of rabbits around here.

I'm all ears if you have suggestions on training a dog not to eat doodoo.....

Sshhhh! We're hunting wabbits... Ha ah ah ah ah ah! I think that this would be a great time to try out the devious figure four.

I say catch and eat the rabbits, leave the little head and spine on a stick a warning for other rabbits that entering your yard is bad joo-joo. :D

I guess lining the fence with claymores is out of the question. :D

About the only thing that comes to mind is to put something on it that's so vile tasting it makes the dog want to avoid it. Maybe some super-duper hot sauce though I'm not even sure that would work.

As an aside, one of the reasons that dogs will eat the droppings from other animals is because they have a very efficient digestive system. The other animals leave nutrients in the droppings that the dog can use. It's a genetic thing and therefore hard to break.

I say go out before you let the pooch into the yard and dose all the rabbit poop you can find with liberal amounts of cayenne pepper. of course leave a nice big water bowl out too. If that does'nt work then get out the powdered habenero pepper that WILL work, unless your dog is insane, then I'd side with the rabbits. Look at it this way, if TS does hit the fan then you have a ready food source locally available right outside your door!

Oh, another thing, make sure to move that 'owl' around to a few different places during the first few weeks it's up. Makes it more realistic to the real critters not to see your new 'Tractor, yuppie, cough, Supply' statue. (not that you're a yuppie, but TS has a bad rap with all the real farmers I know, they won't be caught dead going in there!)

airgun = benjie 392 = multi-pump = variable power. Iron sights work well, or get a peep sight.

archery = try a field blunt, stun the rabbit and then move in for the kill with a hatchet, khukri, machete, chopper, tomhawk..... sling shot would work too, but you need a lot of practice.

Although we can't legally have them here in CA, blowguns (mentioned above) are quiet, cheap, and effective. I learned pretty quickly while visiting a pal in AZ. But if legal, traps and snares would work for a lot more hours of each day (and especially each night).
