how do people buy on the knife exchange so fast!?

Patience is all you need to snag that grail knife you’ve been lookin’ for. Well it doesn’t hurt to have a paid membership, post in the wanted section and make friends. People message me all the time when I talk about knives I like it have wanted in the past.

As you make friends here people remember and keep an eye out for you. I’ve been lookin’ for an old Robeson for a few years now, the other day I got a pm that one was for sale on an auction site. Unfortunately it sold for a little more than I was willing to part with right now. My point was that a friend/member here remembered and let me know about one I’d missed.

I dont have access to a puter during work so I miss a lot of deals but thats probably a good thing I really dont need any more knives lol

Please, if you don’t need anymore, send me what you don’t need. ;) :)

Ok,

I lurk on the exchange part of the forum pretty often looking for that "Grail" knife...
But I just don't understand how so many of these deals are snatched up within 30 seconds to 1 or 2 minutes.
Is there some kind of "alert" text feature that links to your phone that I'm not seeing?
I wish i could spend all day refreshing the page for new deals...
But unfortunately I can't lol
I believe you can "watch" subforums for new threads. Top right above where threads start being listed. It will give you options to get alerts and even emails when new threads are started. For example, I have the fixed blade section set to alert me everytime a thread is started. Recently when I was in the market for a new folder, I did the same. Got a screaming deal on a 204p military only because I was alerted of a new thread. Now, all the alerts and emails might get annoying if you really are only looking for something very specific, but it still might be worth it.

Hope that helps.

This right here is sage advice. If you seriously want to get into the knife game, making friends is the best. Upgrade your membership so you can be easily contacted. I never understand the "I can't PM" complaint. Gold membership is like what, 8 cents a day? Well worth it for what you get.

Make friends with similar interests throughout the various subforums. It's fun and you never know what opportunities will arise. I mentioned that I liked a certain blade. Kind of hard to find. A buddy mentioned he had one and if there was anything I'd like to trade for it. I don't do trades because of the risky nature, but I had gotten to know palonej palonej throughout the forums and felt very comfortable trading with him. Spending time reading, posting, and making friends here can be a very positive thing in many ways.

Very true!

Either put the work in or someone else who wants it more will.. It sucks to be hovering over the forums hitting f5 every 2 seconds.. but it works..

1. Turn your email notifications on for your smart phone for the email that you use for bladeforums.

2. Watch the forum of your selected choice/interest.

3. *Most importantly* .KNOW WHAT YOU WANT AND FOR HOW MUCH.. or at least what youre kinda looking for.
If you hesitate, you'll be taking seconds or thirds.

(Be warned though. Having lots of good deals sent straight to your smart phone can really take a toll on your bank account, TRUST ME... Self control and knowings ones interests are key. Impulse buying can be a mother....)

Other than that Have fun and Happy Treasure Hunting:D

This ^ (and as other have said). I have never done this myself and I have still managed to spend waaaay too much.

That's pretty much my reaction too. Several years ago someone who was a member here at the time dubbed it "the lollyscramble". That name stuck and many of us still use it to describe the Northwoods drops.

Here'a an example from 2017 but every drop is about the same. Someone in the linked thread even commented that 7 minutes is "an eternity" for a Northwoods drop.

Thanks RS. Now I see why knives are cobbled up so fast in the Traditionals for sale area.
Does GEC do the same? I've got a few, but only from our exchange area.

Generally speaking, yes but not always. It depends on the pattern. For the last several years the Northwoods knives have been made by GEC . You may have already known that.

Most dealers do their best to provide a practical option for reserving a regular run GEC pattern in advance but even the reservations sometimes fill up in minutes depending on the pattern. Those knives aren't even made yet when the reservations go up.

Thanks once again. No, I literally had no idea how it worked. I just know that everytime I have tried to research one of them that's up for sale, seems every sure I went to said something to the effect of, out of stock.
Who exactly is KSF and are they the parent company?

I thought they were a Bladeforum supporting dealer but I just checked and they aren't on the list anymore. I'll have to edit out their initials in my previous posts. I'll shoot you a PM with the information when I finish doing that.

Try buying a Northwoods knife when they do a drop. They usually drop about 500 knives per drop and they are all gone in 5-7 minutes.

Not to worry, they'll be up in the Traditionals section at a significant markup within a couple days.

Lol, I know what u mean. I missed 2 great deals yesterday. One by less then a minute and the other had like 3 people before me in 3 minutes. You just got to keep checking frequently.

Write software programs that fetch the exchange web-page every minute, and generates alerts based on the "terms" you are interested in. Send those alerts to something that is always in front of you (for e.g., an email inbox). Its that simple. ;-)

For the impatient, it took me a full year of reading through the Traditional forum to land my first TC barlow.

There is a trick to getting a Northwoods knife, which I have used successfully in the past -- in your browser, keep the KSF page open, on another tab login to PayPal and keep that session open too. So as the knives drop, you can put them in cart, and checkout faster (since you are already logged-in to PayPal). :-)

If something is already claimed don't hesitate to call seconds on it. I've scored quite a few great items being second or third in line.

Yeah it’s funny how some members will just blindly call “I’ll take it”, then back out AFTER they read the sales description lol. There’s a few serial repeaters in the Traditional Exchange.
