How do you answer when someone ask you why you EDC?

I carry because if I didn't, I wouldn't be able to do my job, no matter what my job is, I'll find a reason for carryin' a knife.

People don't usually ask me and if my job is in a place where they're not accepted, I carry an appropriate knife, no need for a Cold Steel Pocket Bushman at the office but as a maintenance mechanic/construction worker I could justify it, in an office settin' I'd be more apt to carry a small SAK and probably not open but bottom of my pocket, no need to advertise I carry a knife unless I'm in a mutually friendly knife environment.

Because I can...
Any more than that is no one's concern..
Then again in 48 yrs no ones asked why.

Q: Why did Chuck Norris cross the road?

A: None of your damn business! ;)

:D

Interestingly enough, I haven't been asked that in years. Even when I stop in the office in the morning, no one really cares that I have a knife in my pocket. It clear that some folks freak out more readily in some parts of the country more than others. Another thing, I see people walking around with small and large pistols all the time, no one really gives them a second look either.

The best reason for carrying a knife was posted here some time ago, but I can't remember who said it: "People carry knives because God didn't give them claws."

I also work in an office in Southern California. I use my knives for everything you could possibly imagine needing a knife for in an office environment . . . opening mail, cutting up boxes, removing shrink wrap, etc. As a result, I carry lightweight gentlemen's folders rather than pocket bricks. And I do NOT advertise that I have them on me. So I don't clip them to my pocket and I don't play with them in public. That's just asking for trouble as far as I'm concerned.

As the saying goes, discretion is the better part of valor.

Wasn't that an ad campaign for Spyderco back in the 80s?

I don't know. I tried Googling the expression and I didn't come up with anything useful.

Sorry folks, but if they ask politely, answering with any form of "none of your damn business", is not only rude, but not exactly a way to improve the image of knife carriers.

Forbes listed the Knife as the greatest tool in the history of mankind, and at least 7 of the top 20 were variations of knives, To vikings carrying a knife was the symbol of a free man, and Luke 22:36. knives have been with man so long it should feel odd not to have one

Really? Do you have it written down for them? You must get the strangest looks.

I tell them I carry because a knife is tool for cutting things and i end up having to cut things every now and then. Without fail the people that don't think its necessary are the ones that always end up asking if i can cut something open or off for them.

I simply tell them that I have never been in a situation where I said to myself "man I wish I didn't have a knife with me". Now I certainly have been in situations where I told myself "man I really wish I had a knife right now".

Tell them its better to have something and never need it, then to need something and not have it. Besides its a tool, not a weapon.

This is exactly what I say.

I use my knife or one of my SAK tools several times every single day.

As a commercial raft guide it is actually the law that you have to have a knife. People see a guides knife and ask why they carry fairly often. My favorite answer is -with a very sincere smile- "In case I have to kill you." Or "because 'they' won't let me carry a gun!"

In other day to day settings, if I think the person may be easily offended, I might say "What kind of MAN doesn't carry a knife?"

If anyone uses the initialism "EDC" as a verb in my presence, I leave. So if asked, "Why do you EDC a whatever?" I walk away.

Life is too short to be this cantankerous. If you feel you are better than others because of the manner in which you speak you will not get far in life. Are you going to post in every thread that mentions EDC? It's a common term in this forum!!

The answer is just in case you need to cut something! And I like to also.

Come on, Stick, you gotta chill. It ain't that bad. There's more to life than proper use of the English language.

I use it to cut things like rope/twine, boxes, mail, and any other thing that might need to be cut.
