I'd like to keep it on my belt, but the belt from the pack makes that impractical. I could keep it on the pack belt or straps, but I'd like to keep it on me. I usually carry a Landi MPS, but this would go for any small knife.
Use a dangler or other such low riding sheath. Keeps the pack belt from getting in the way. Also makes the knife easier to get to if you're wearing a longer coat/jacket.
I have been experimenting with an ideal myself with this problem. For instance, I like to carry a Multitool on my belt, but when wearing a pack with a wasit strap. It's a no go. So took a regular carabiner and put it through the loop on the sheath and clipped it on a belt loop. It just hangs low enough to that it doesn't get in the way. Now you can move it around on you or clip it on your pack.
For a belt knife, I think I might weave a drop loop out 550 cord just for it. I haven't had the chance to try that yet.
Right side, pants belt. I want that with me as an added layer when and if I need it. If it's on a pack, it will probably be out of reach when I need it most.
There is no sheath design that I like better than an in the front pocket sheath with a clip. It keeps it out of the way of the belt strap from pack. If I'm not carrying a pocket sheath I'll use the dangler that TF made for my Laconico project W or just strap it to the pack.
With a pack waist belt and the different body positions involves with active backpacking (squatting, reaching, bending, etc.), I find a comfortable ride and ready access are paramount.
I like the knife to be on my person at all times for emergencies and convenience.
That rules out a pack attachment (off at rest) and anything that interferes with that waist strap from the pack (close horizontal or vertical belt sheaths).
Otherwise, people have used simple paracord loops, carabiners, or other homemade danglers. I'm having Josh K work on a Dangler for me that can be moved easily from sheath to sheath while letting the knife ride flat so it doesn't flop around .
I keep it attached vertically upside down on one of my pack's straps. I've thought about using a thigh rig, but the strap setup has worked well for me so far. It's out of the way enough where I don't notice it until I need it, and when I do need it, it's right there and instantly accessible.
Usually in my backpack, or if I have a small puukko (Roselli Grandfather or similar), in my jacket pocket. Rarely on my belt anyway; too inconvenient with a larger backpack with a waist belt.
