Hey guys, Ive read a lot of this site's posts before but I finally created my own account because I just had to get in on these conversations and would love getting some personal advice from all of you!

I would really enjoy getting a Case knife but I dont even know where to begin!!! Mini trapper? Mini copperhead? Mini copperlock? Swayback gent? Swayback jack? Texas jack? hah these have all caught my eye but I'm a little overwhelmed in trying to narrow it down to a knife and I want to make sure I make a good purchase!

I have heard nothing but good things about the knife community and I'm sure you guys wont let me down!!!

case texas jack

go ahead folks, lock the thread, its been answered :D :)

Seriously, texas jack is a great choice, cant say enough good about it

Well, you need to consider what you prefer in the following:

Size
# of blades
Type of steel (stainless or carbon)
Type of handle material
If single blade, locking or not locking

You also need to think of how and where you plan to use it, which will help answer a lot of those questions.

For me personally, all of the ones you listed are good choices. If I had to pick one, it would be the Small Texas Jack 62032 in CV Steel, Amber Jigged Bone. But you may want larger, or smaller, or 3 blades, or 1. You may like lockbacks. You may prefer Delrin over bone. You may want stainless steel.

Eventually the only answer is to read posts, look at the knives on the Case web site and dealer web sites, and educate yourself. There's no real shortcut.

Hah yea I like that the texas jack is a little bigger than the peanut which seems to be one that a lot of people like but I dont think I would be as in to it as others might be.. although I shouldnt write any knife off since I have never handled any of them... ugh hah

Thanks jc57 I think Id like 1 or 2 blades, im open to any handle material and I guess I would be open to either steel type, I like the look of a well weathered CV blade but the old ss blades still have a cool look to them

I second the Texas Jack. I have the amber bone and the Stag. but I also have a lot of different Patterns from Case as well.

What, are there any other case knives except the mighty peanut ?
Really, it depends what you want it to do, how you want to carry it, what size are you comfortable with, carbon or ss, scales material..
As a good and capable, highly versatile edc, i like the medium stockman, but i do prefer to carry the peanut most of the time, even if i choose to carry another extra knife.

Mini Trapper is a nice alternative:

Dang Rsmith_77 that knife looks cool, I really like the patina it has and the way the bone looks worn.. have you had experience with the swaybacks? or a mini trapper wharncliffe? I think that blade shape looks cool too but is it as practical for cutting as the clip of the texas jack?

There are many good Case patterns to choose from. I focus on patterns and handle materials available in Chrome Vanadium (CV) as I prefer it to their stainless. My top 2 recommendations are the Peanut and the Mini Trapper. Both are excellent values and have nice blade profiles with half-stops. The Peanut is something I feel every traditional knife guy should have. I also like the Sodbuster, Sodbuster JR., Texas Jack, Swayback Jack, Seahorse Whittler and several Stockman options.

Here is one of my Mini Trappers in Chestnut Jigged Bone and CV blades. I am still amazed that is was less than $40 NIB.

unfortunately i have not had a swayback or any wharncliffe knife
and while i have a couple of mini-trappers they are not wharncliffes either

the blade shape just doesnt appeal to me personally, i much prefer the look of the sheepsfoot blades
which is next on my wishlist :D

and also what do you guys use the spey blade shape for? is it more practical to have a pen shape than a spey? I really like the california clip of the trappers.. like a lot hah

Hi T_MAC, and welcome. And hello to everyone else. I'm no stranger to traditional pocket knives, but only recently paid a lot of mind to this spot. Great folks! I hope we're both welcomed. As for a Case knife, I tote one every day, in addition to whichever other one happens to be in the other pocket. Yes, I almost always carry two. Just pick a pattern and buy it. No loss. It won't be the only Case you'll buy. I have about eight. And three more are in the mail in transit to my house now! Both CV and CRES.

i would say alot of us dont, (perhaps i should qualify that, I DONT)
but i would also say that those who like the spey, they seem to LOVE it

if i were to go back to a trapper pattern, i would dedicate the spey as my food blade, and my clip as my utility blade
but thats just me

Mini Trapper single-blade Wharncliffe:

Either are fine knives.

now if I could get a 2 blade knife with both a full sized california clip and wharncliffe that would be sweeeeeeet!!!!

jc57 you read my mind! I cant type my posts fast enough!!! I love that second knife you posted that exactly matched my description!!
