How do you choose a Case knife?!

I narrow it down to a few particular patterns that I find useful, or have a sentimental quality: my grandfather always carried a medium 4 blade congress or a small coke bottle jack knife. I love the thin, flat profile of the canoe, and the usefulness of the baby doctor's knife with a pen blade and spatula.

Then I narrow it down to handle material, blade steel, badge/logo style. So systematically, I narrow my choices to just a few, then go look at the bank balance.

If you don't narrow it down, before you know it there are a dozen Case knives in your desk drawer!

Who wants to narrow it down???? And only a Dozen in your Desk Drawer???? LOL :D

If Case came out with a Texas Jack in Chestnut bone, I'd be all over that. I don't care for the amber bone.

Yea I like the look of the mini trapper wharncliffe in red jigged bone but I'm not a fan of the star and strips shield emblem on that knife... If only it had a different shield.

I am a big big big guy, tall and fat, with huge honking hands. I carry a peanut every day. They are surprisingly versatile for their size, and no one bats an eye when you are using one. They are quite inexpensive in the yellow delrin category.

Anything from the Tony Bose collaborations, especially the swayback jack or swayback gent would be my next choice.

As for patterns, Case only offers CV in select covers, like chestnut bone and amber bone, AFAIK. However, some dealers have a multitude of options. If you can find one, any of the Case Bose annuals are usually top notch.

How do you go about finding a dealer? I don't think there are any around where I live (Fargo). I have a cv chestnut bone peanut on the way from online (hope it is a nice one) and I guess I'll have to keep my eyes open for a mini trapper that I like enough to buy!

You should be able to do a search for knife dealers in your area and find something within driving distance. If there aren't any, you can sometimes find some good knives at sporting goods stores, hardware stores, farmers coops, building material stores, and such. It does pay to go to a store or a knife/gun show and look at them up close and personal. There are so many patterns and so many types and styles of handles/covers/scales, whatever ya want to call them, that choosing without actually handling is tough! AND, it also pays to check on build quality; even makers like Case with over a century of knife building experience can turn out a clunker. Weak springs, bad blade grinds, poor fitting covers, etc., you'll find all sorts of flaws in pocketknives of any brand. I took a risk a couple of times and bought two gorgeous and well made stag copperheads off of Ebay; they were even better than I'd expected from the photos, so you can get some great finds there, but it's risky, and there is always that chance of getting one with build flaws. I did like most folks do, buying knives helter skelter as they caught my eye, and it took a while to narrow down what I really wanted in a knife and how I wanted them shaped. Like many things in life, the chase is half the fun, so get out and look, you're bound to find something sooner or later.

Case has a web site. Here is the link to it:

http://www.wrcase.com/index_en.php

In the middle of that page, type in your zip code and click "Search", right beside where it says "Find a [sic] authorized Case dealer near you."

If you are in Fargo, ND it looks like the nearest one is in Minnesota. I always just buy mine on line.

As far as a Case Knife ~~ I like the Sway Back Jack & the Sway Back Gent with the Wharncliffe Blade.* Don't know what it is about that Blade but it will do just about anything I need a Blade to do and look good doing it.!"" I own others but those are my two favorite styles in the Case Knife and I probably have a dozen each of them ~~ guess I might just like them.!! LOL

Holy cow wolf-man-12! A dozen each?! That's awesome, and yea idk what it is about that blade shape but to me the wharncliffe just looks super nice on a case.. I like both the swayback gent and jack- definitely on my list to get someday in the future. Is the gent noticeably thinner than the jack? Do you prefer one over the other and if so what's your reasoning?

Choose? More like impulse. Color catalogs are a gateway to the addiction. :D

I love my peanut! I just like the way it feels in my hand.. I keep putting my hand in my pocket just to feel the knife ha. The bone is a beautiful color and all the transitions are nice and smooth. There is a little "hole" in the bone but honest I don't care, it really gives the knife character. How am I able to upload pics for you guys?

I like the medium stockman 6318 in bone or 3318 in yellow delrin. You can also get one with a punch instead of a Spey 6318PU or 3318PU.

How to choose?

Usually I walk into the place and after fondling way too much merchandise say, "I'll take that one. And this one, and those over there."

Yes, Peanuts make a good worry stone. One of mine is riding in my jeans watch pocket right now. I always find my fingers in that pocket....

I use photobucket and the image link pasted in my post.

Copperhead!! It's a tad shorter than 4". Very pocket friendly...
