How do you close a folder?

Guys just close them however works for you:yawn:

Thank you for your insightful post:rolleyes:...the guy is trying to figure out the best and safest way to teach youngsters...

That being said, I usually close mine on my leg or one-handed. The Boy Scout method is fine though. I have never seen anyone cut themsleves with it and I probably saw it a few thousand times in my years in Scouts and hanging out with my old Scout friends...

2 Hold in right hand w/fingers on the scales, and swipe the back of the blade forward across the side of my right leg up near the pocket. I've used this one since I was a wee lad so it's second nature.

Same here. Even if there is a lock involved, I close it the same way. The safest so far are the sliding lock SAKS... Linerlocks are a bit more risky but so far I haven't got cut while closing a folder.

I can close most folders one-handed without even looking at them, but the method I always teach children is to hold the spine of the blade with one hand and the back of the handle with the other and then move the handle to the blade! NOT the other way 'round. That way if the knife "snaps" shut the handle is all that hits them, and they tend to have much more control over the operation this way. There's little risk of injuring yourself this way because not only are your hands out of the way but the blade itself is static and as such much less likely to cause any harm even if the operation is bungled.

Carefully - and never while watching TV. I have only nicked myself once with a lockback or frame/liner lock - and that was while watching the tube (Buck 110); all other knife injuries were slippies - usually dull SAK blades being carelessly closed. Common sense is the key.

My wife does her counted stitch while watching her fav shows ('NCIS', 'Lost', etc) - and has had to undo/redo entire colored threads several times due to a 'mistake'. So much for women 'multi-tasking'. I play with flashlights while watching the tube now - the worst haphazzard there is aggravating a cat - or my wife.

I crossed the line several days back, having just received a few Vic Alox SAKs, I wanted to drop some gunoil in their pivots and 'work' them... yeah, while watching NCIS. Oops - almost did it again! Gotta be diligent - and careful.

Exactly! This is the safest way to show a kid how to handle a folder IMO. The scout way is less safe and has less control.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that. When teaching kids (<12) how to close knives, you're going to want to be pretty conservative.

That being said, as long as you respect the fact that the knife is sharp and dangerous, and treat it as such, you shouldn't get "bit". ;)

"Shouldn't" but many do, especially novices and careless sorts.

I use all sorts of ways to close my folders too but the way I endorse for teaching is the safest, period.

Oh, I agree. When teaching, always teach it the safest way you can. Let them figure out how to shut it faster, and less safe, on their own time.
