How do you deal with low-ballers?

I have this in a txt file on my desktop and just cut and paste it, no mus no fuss no drama

Thanks for the offer! For now I'll keep it at the asking price, but if I change my mind I'll let you know.

I have only been low-balled by folks with low post counts and no feedback. Never by an actual member here who contributes in other areas and is not just here looking for a good deal.

That right there, says a great deal about when a deal will go smooth as glass or not.

I would like to think thats the case, Im in the middle of a transition atm where a seller who has more posts than you who is not meeting multiple shipping commitments that he made himself. I think its the man and not how many posts he has.

That is true, post count isn't everything. It is nice to see a history here on BF's though, even if the person hasn't done any deals...
You can sort of get a feel about a person by looking at their posts.
There have been a few long term members who were highly regarded, and had done numerous transactions that for some reason, fall off the train.
Failure to ship a knife that was bought and paid for, failure to communicate, and refusing to send a refund.

All I know is that when I was new (and still now) I was terrified of making some mistake. I bought a knife for 750$, first purchase here. It was described as like new/perfect. This thing was rough to saw the least but I bought it from a user with a lot of feedback and posts and just ate the purchase out of fear of ruining my chance at BF. It took a month and a 50% loss to sell it. A lot of members helped me through PMs and emails though, taught me the ways of buying here. The low post count and no feedback I had made me do things I would never do now.

I wouldn't get insulted by it. Low-balling is just one style of price negotiation. It's not the most effective one, but it's just business - no need to get offended by it.

Some people like haggling. Some are going to hit you low and see what you counter with. I don't think ive ever really haggled with anyone yet on this site, though most of my buys were under $50. Everyone buying is looking for a good deal and some people out there are counting to find that one deal that's just really good. I do think you are more inclined to get low balled based on the reason for selling. If you post up you need to sell to purchase your grail knife or your in dire need of cash, of course they are going to low ball you. When people really need money for bad situations they will take what they can get.

haggling is life.

low-balling is business. usually the kind of thing done en-mass such that, the few times it works, it's a win.

kinda like used car sales :D

some time ago i was selling some things, at a very reasonable price, i thought... guy responds, with an offer, and his LIST OF RESEARCH on why his offer was fair. it was STUPIDLY LOW and comical. in his opinion, i should sell to him, at very low price, because, historically, say 9 items out of 1000 sold for that price once. so, he should get that price. course, he's kinda forgetting that 991 items sold at much higher prices ;) mmm. needless to say, i thanked him for his market research and wished him the best of luck getting that 1/10 of a percent lifetime deal :D

I like this!
Short, sweet and to the point.

no need to say more:thumbup:

I generally just ignore them if I feel they're out of line and don't think their post count or Gold/Platinum status has anything to do with it. It's generally the same names you notice that do stuff like constant sparring with others and have zero regard for any forum guideline which usually leads me to believe it wouldn't be a smooth transaction with a happy ending anyway. No sense in taking it personally though

If you want to see some serious flakes and ridiculous offers, try out Armslist.

I've bought one knife since being a member. It was a 50 year Buck 110 signed by Chuck Buck on the blade.I mailed Flatlander 1963 a Postal money order and he mailed me the knife. They crossed paths in the mail.We never even bothered to leave feedback.

One thing that did frustrate me was when I posted a LNIB knife for about 120.00 off retail, from 400.00 to 280.00. Suddenly several people came out of the woodwork to give me offers in the $150-250 range. I always sell at prices far below retail and scaled to the condition of the knife. I suppose some might have seen that as desperation, and decided to try to get the knife for as little as they possibly could.

When you are going to sell things - house, car, knife - whatever; it's just part of the game. No reason to take it personal or get upset. Just say sorry - or counter offer and move on. Take the high road and be happy. I mean who cares?

Also if something is worth x amount and you have it set at that it will sell. But because this is like the stock market some items are worth less now then a week ago. Is the low ball offer crazy low or the current market value of set item......Market changes so much. If I get an offer that is unrealistic I just respond with a no thank you. But it it's close to the fair market value with in a few hundred buck than the haggling begins. Its just part of the industry.
