How Do You Decide?

All of the above. I’ve made up checklists and researched until I found something that checked most of my boxes. I’ve seen one or two that I just had to have at first sight. I’ve done the “why the heck not” thing. I’ve had holes in my collection that needed to be filled, though admittedly I made most of them up. And I’ve got a couple that just followed me home. Most buys have been conscious decisions driven more or less by impulse.

In all honesty, I could easily get by with one or two good medium sized SAKs, between pocket and TV table. Everything else is ‘that would be really cool to have, and I could use it for <insert obscure, not likely to ever be performed task here>. Only one I had second thoughts about, but I’m not sorry I bought it. I don’t regret any of them, because they all bring me joy one way or another.

Save the money. Don’t buy just to spend. If it is not blatantly obvious what you should get. Dont buy anything.

Keep it in your wallet, but as $100 bills. When the right thing comes along you’ll know it. That’s what I do. I just passed new knife money and am entering new rifle territory.
New Rifle Territory is good territory

I've been on the fence about buying the Microtech Ultratech Star Wars OTF.

My local gun store has one, for regular price, but its the Jedi Knight, and I really want the Jedi Master.
I don't really like the Ultratech, especially the glass breaker dingus, but Star Wars.
I would have a really hard justifying using such a limited edition knife, but I also have a hard time justifying buying a knife and NOT using it.
Round and round and round we go.

I almost decided to just get the Jedi Knight, but I decided to get a holosun red dot for my Canik TP9SFX Signature Series Whiteout instead.

So when the knife money in your wallet is making you sit crooked, and you know you have to burn some of it off before your back starts hurting: how do you decide what knife gets bought next?
Is it the conscious birth and growth of an idea?
Is it a "Why the heck not?" kind of thing?
Do you decide that there is a hole in your collection that needs plugging?
Do you see something pretty, and it follows you home?
How much is a conscious decision, and how much is impulse?

Thinking about this a bit more .... the funny thing is when I'm waiting for a knife, like a custom that takes a couple of months to make, or something being shipped from Eastern Europe for weeks, there is no itch.

Maybe I should order a Survive! knife ?

🤣

I generally watch the makers that I like and see what they are releasing. If it catches my eye then I may. Similar with discontinued models, I will already have an idea of what it is i want and just wait for it to appear and do the process about want/need/asking price and go from there.

I have done all of the op's lines to my self. Lately I am trying to be more realistic in what I want in the collection. This last year I started to adhere to the if one is coming in, one should go out. My tastes have changed over the years in what I like and what I use, so it was time to move a number of knives that just sat there because I was less fond of them than I used to be. For example I used to think I liked combo serrated blades and was always on the fence with tanto blades. so now most of those types are gone replaced with blade profiles I like now. Otherwise if I see something I like and the cost are reasonable, I must likely will buy it from either here, a retailer or maker.

I'm at the point that I've got a LOT of knives, so I can be pretty picky now. I look at all the newest stuff, droll over customs and discontinued models, and hunt for info on the stuff that I find interesting. As I'm going along looking at blades, something that I've been eyeing for awhile will popup and that's when I snag it.

My method is THAT scientific!! 🤪

Trust the science!
