How Do You Decide?

I’m into the older ZTs, and trying to acquire some of the older models that I didn’t buy at the time or some that were made before I was even interested in knives.
And also anything new from ZT I’ll buy if I think I might even remotely like it, because chances are I will.
I’m a pretty boring edc guy, I usually just carry my regular PM2, sometimes a different ZT.

I have a tendency to take a long time to buy something. If I see one on the exchange forum at a decent price with a box and like new, I will jump on it.

Previously I really was mix of impulse/following certain designers and what they were dropping. Currently I'm in the process of selling all but 4 of my favorite knives and just going to focus on using and appreciating them.

In other areas of my life I'm a one item man. 1 pen, 1 light, 1 watch.... Somehow knives took me away from that simplicity and having a lot of extras just sitting there actually messed with my head some. I know there will be some knives in the future the interest me but I'm a lot happier with fewer knives and I'm going to work to keep my number low going forward.

I'm not a collector. If I buy a knife, it's because I hope to use it, to have it be that one knife that goes immediately into my pocket, and for it to feel so comfortable in the hand that to leave it at home when I walk out the door would be unthinkable. I have not found that knife yet. I have found some really good ones, but never that perfect one. So the search continues.
Most of the new, fashionable knives are just absolutely butt-ugly to me. I like really simple lines and neutral handles and a clean look. I do recognize that knives, like other tools, are built for specific uses and I shouldn't expect one to do all things equally well, but that won't stop me from thinking the perfect one is just around the corner.

I watch Jim Skelton and Dirk Werning a lot. They usually spark some interest in a particular blade....then the search begins.

You should look into the Monterey Bay Knives Old Guard. Simple, clean, and feels great in hand. Love the one I have.

Oh man, if they made that with a mid-back lock instead of a frame lock, I'd be all over that. Thanks for pointing it out, exactly the sort of thing I'd go for.

I think next time I'll consult my ouija board.

In all honesty it takes me forever to decide on a knife (or anything for that matter). I've gotten pickier as I've gotten older, so many knives that are "almost" what I want.

It's weird, but even though money isn't the issue, it is. Maybe too much of watching my dad spend 75% of our money on himself growing up so money was always tight. Even as an adult, he'd still get pissed when he noticed I had a new shirt or shoes. So, while I'm not tight, it takes me a while to buy anything not essential that is over $100. Gotta "justify" it.

They have liner locks if you are into those. That's what mine is and it's fantastic.

Hopefully you are not like me, I have 6 knives, and my wife - 22. All chosen and purchased by me, and I can use them and do whatever I want with them without permission. I am still better than a friend who has given his wife for a birthday present a gearbox for the car they share. "No more knives for the next three months." is the phrase I hear after every purchase. So to the OP - I do not want to decide for a time being, because realistically there is not a point to think about this till Christmas.

Decide? I don't.. Wanted an AD10.--- Drop point, or tanto?? I could not decide.

First consideration is it has to be a user. Secondly in a steel I haven’t had that would be hard wearing at work. Thirdly size and design. Until I bought the 2nd hand Stretch2 to try ZDP-189 recently , I was down to my GB2, Canis & SFH, that I use day to day. I have penciled in K390 to try and would like it in the Police 4 G10 if possible though it’s proving a tough find over here.
The plan is to get to 3-5 user folders and a couple of fixed blades eventually.
