Today my grandmother called me saying she just found a smart watch In her closet she had forgotten to give me for Christmas.
I said that my old Casio's or Timex weekender are smart enough for me, and that I didn't like the smart watch concept.
I told her that while I appreciated the thought I was very happy with what I did get which i use daily so she should just send it to one of my brothers who will probably love it.

So how do you feel about the smart watch concept, and would you try one out ?

To me a smartphone is technological and convenient enough.
All my watch does is tell me the date and time at a quick glance and occasionally provide a stopwatch or timer, anything else is kind of nonsensical in my opinion and I feel technology is starting to find it's way into things it has no business being in.

I had a hard time switching to a smartphone (apple) but balked at the whole smart watch thing. GF bought me the apple watch and all my traditional watches were sold not long after.
A smart watch is so dang handy in certain situations. Only comes off to charge it up or shower.

I have a pebble time and it has, more or less, replaced all of my previous watches.
Getting notifications of messages and calls, instant access to my calendar and the ability to control music playing through the phone let me access a bunch of watch appropriate information and not have to use the actual phone.

I'm not going to try and read a webpage or surf the internet on it (not an option even and one of the reasons I got the pebble) but it presents important information in and unobtrusive way and I'm hooked.

I've got a Fitbit Versa. I don't know if it qualifies as a smart watch, but I get texts on it. There is a bunch of other stuff that I didn't bother to figure out.

I use it to track my steps, heart rate and exercise. It seems to work fine for that. Oh yeah, it tells time too.

As a watch addict and collector (Rolex, Tudor, Omega, IWC, Sinn, Tutima, Eterna) of automatic, mechanical watches, I totally dislike "smart" watches. I do have a few quartz watches that I consider "beaters".

I also have a few mechanicals.

I had an Apple Watch for awhile. Got rid of it. Hated having an expensive device who’s sole purpose in life was to tell me when to take my phone out and look at it.

I can see where it would be beneficial. But I’m not in many meetings, I don’t need a constant measure of my pulse rate, and don’t really care how many steps I take, as I take plenty for my job.

I haven't tried one, but I'm not into the concept. My regular watch does everything I want it to do. Text messages and phone calls interrupt me enough without having to extend down my arm...

I have a cheapie that I use for working out, primarily because it tracks steps and such. Otherwise, it sits on the dresser and I have a quality auto on my wrist. Life has enough distractions without we checking the incessant vibrating time telling device.

So there are a few reasons I don't bother with Smart watches

#1 Aesthetics: There is something about the classier look to a traditional analogue watch that I love. I don't and won't wear digital watches for the most part I could consider one for specialized use but would need to have the specialized use frequently to justify spending money on one.

#2 Detachment/Distraction: I want to be able to get away from my phone and the distraction of it but a smart watch would be the opposite of that.

#3 ... There was more I think but my mind went off somewhere else.

I think with current tech they're a niche device. For some people they're very, very useful, for me it would just be an expensive bauble that doesn't do a good deal of what make my smartphone valuable to me.

Yeah my Smartphone really only has a few functions for me.

#1 A Phone: Surprising fact smart phones can be used to make and receive calls :p but yeah I would also lump in to the phone aspect now, as these other features are on basic flip phones, texting and contact management.

#2 Music Player/iPod: I loved my iPod if I wasn't so lazy and cheap about it I might actually repair/upgrade it but for now my iPhone with a purchased music player app, because the built in one lacks features I use, serves as my iPod mostly used in the car.

#3 Pokemon Go: I don't play many games on my phone but someone got me into this and its a convenient little thing to play here and there specially when you have to wait at places. It helps urge me to get out and hike trails because walking does stuff in the game.

#4 e-mail: Yes I put this below games and that is because I no longer have a job where I work on call or after hours so I can happily ignore my emails and check them maybe 3-4 times a day and at least one of those times is from my PC. That is purely person emails my work email is on my work PC and stays at work.

I could do without #2, #3, & #4 so I don't even need a Smartphone let alone a Smartwatch.

I wear a smart watch (Nixon The Mission) everyday while it's not indispensable I do like it a great deal.

I've seen a few times when it would be nice, mostly when I'm out riding the bike and know that a call or text may come through. The calendar feature would be nice and some of the notification features but I'm a fan of being able to put my phone away once home so that I don't feel like a slave to it. I feel like the smart watches feed into that "gotta check my phone" sensation which I already struggle with some times.

I think it would be decent at work when I don't want to pull my phone out, like seeing if a text or email is important (get a lot of junk during the day) but so far I don't feel the need to pay that much money for one. I consider and I have a few coworkers and friends with them and I've tried them but so far, not for me.

I think talk-to-text is the most enticing feature, seeing some other cycling friends texting with it while riding so they can still "work" while enjoying the ride.

What many would say about your Rolex *shug*

These two things can coexist with the same person
Both points taken. I do haul a smart phone around and usually an ipad with cellular data capability (easier to read and type with).

To me the "smart watch" is just an update of the geeky calculator watches of the 80s. My phone can do what a smart watch does and more. My Seiko Monster does everything I want a watch to do: time, date, day, looks cool, and is waterproof. The bonus is it never needs batteries.

For me I mostly use my phone for YouTube videos and forums, to take pictures for forums, and to look up information.
Of course it's a phone and I do call people but i may only make one phone call a day, and texting is rare for me.

Based on this IdI say a smart watch would not benifit me at all, and beyond that I think they look stuped.

I have and use a smartwatch daily. I'm on the move a lot (driving) and often in situation where it would be in bad taste to remove my phone from my pocket. Having a smartwatch allows me to see calls and text and make a decision as to whether I need to respond or not at a glance.
