How do you feel about smart watches ?

I have an Apple Watch that I got for Christmas 18 months ago and I like it. I like being able to text via voice while driving, check email real quick in meetings, see alarms for meetings, etc.

I do prefer my Omega and Tag though.

Also, I’m sure my $1000 smartwatch will be a $20 paperweight in a few years the way technology changes....

I had an Apple Watch series 3, which was great for the bike trails.
I could keep my phone in my backpack and use the watch for comms
Or checking my heart rate or mileage. But after awhile I got sick of it
And went back to my dive watches.

I have nothing against smart watches, but my phone is enough distraction from reality for me!
I love me a classic watch!

I am not interested in a “smart” watch —mostly for reasons already cited and the fact that I don’t use a watch in the first place and have no interest in starting to wear one.

I have longed for a Samsung S3 Frontier ever since I saw pictures of my friend, Rival's watch.
I wear a fitbit flex for a health program I am in through my place of work, and I am planning on getting an s3 when my fitbit fails.

Come on fitbit.....FAIL......

Send the fitbit to me (No, I'm not asking for it, but I killed my fitbit versa in only 3 months so I could help you out).

A little over a year ago I would have bashed smart watches. Ever since I was a kid I've always worn a G-Shock. My most recent G-Shock was the Mudman. Solar powered, every feature you needed, moon phases, plus a compass and thermometer. I gradually got into smart watches by wanting a fitbit for working out. I started with the fitbit blaze. It's about the same size as an apple watch but a third of the price. It grew on me and I stopped wearing my Mudman. I liked being able to see my messages without digging my phone out of my pocket especially if I was busy or had dirty hands. I then moved up to the Apple Watch Series 2 last summer. I fell in love with all the customization the different faces allowed. I've always liked things that have multiple purposes and this fit the bill for me. This does everything that my mudman does and a lot more. My only gripe and the one thing that my mudman has over the apple watch is battery life. My mudman could last half my lifetime without issues with a little daylight whereas my apple watch will barely make it by 2 full days with regular use.

It has helped a lot in law enforcement since I don't usually take my phone down on calls. Sometimes dispatch or a supervisor will need to call us on scene and having the apple watch helps when I'm not able to get to my unit quickly.

I've always been into gadgets and I think the available apps for apple watch customizations are like jeep parts to a jeep.

I have and use a smartwatch daily. I'm on the move a lot (driving) and often in situation where it would be in bad taste to remove my phone from my pocket. Having a smartwatch allows me to see calls and text and make a decision as to whether I need to respond or not at a glance.
This is the single most reason to have a smart watch for me. I miss calls a lot because I laid the phone down somewhere and don't hear it ring. I don't own a smart watch; just another expensive widget or so my attitude has been to date. But I have been considering changing or trying one out. A lot of people seem to like them a lot. The style aspect means nothing to me.

The only good thing about smart watches to me is that many kids today just use their cell phones as their time piece and I really don't understand that at all. So, with the popularity of a smart watch, they have the wrist watch....

Question: Is the vibrate feature for a phone call or alarm pretty aggressive? That is for the hearing deficient folks like me. If I knew it was aggressive, I'd get one and wear it to bed and use as my alarm. Nobody has ever answered this question and dismiss it .... of course it vibrates or can vibrate..... but how aggressive is the vibration?

The vibrate feature isn’t too bad. It helps me because with my radio always going off from other officers or dispatch I sometimes don’t hear my phone but I’ll feel my watch vibration when I get a call or text. It has setting to make the “haptic” more aggressive or minimal. I have mine maxed out and it works great. It does have an alarm feature that will sound off and vibrate. I sleep like a rock so I can’t say if it would wake you up but it’s worth a try.

I remember back in high school I took engineering graphics and we designed a watch that would vibrate and flash to wake up someone that was deaf. I should have patented it while I had the chance :(

Thanks Batosai117 for the comments on the alarm vibrate feature. I am considering one.... I use a device called "Shake-n-Wake" which actually works really well. I have never failed to wake up when it goes off. They have this elastic wrist band or to wear on your leg but I find that uncomfortable. I took that off and slip it inside a pocket tea short pocket so it is generally sitting right on my chest when it vibrates.

I don’t understand wearing a watch at all. Once smart phones came along, watches became obsolete outside of a few occupations. People like them though so what do I know?

I might say this with an old electronic PDA. When smart phones/cell phones developed the PDA capabilities which integrated your contact list with phone numbers and if you like email and regular street address. They eliminated PDA's entirely from the market place.

Some feel this way about smart phones and not needing a wrist watch. I don't exactly feel it's handy to dig out your cell phone to check the time. That of course assumes that time matters to you. I have worn a watch since I was probably in late grade school. Like an EDC knife, I feel pretty naked or missing something if it is not there on my wrist. I tried pocket watches, but would find using a cell phone just as easy to use. Plus I would tend to break a pocket watch.

Why watch:
- Because watches are awesome. Why have knife when you can have boxcutter?
- If you don't want or can't take your phone with you.
- Your phone can break or run out of battery (unlikely, but possible).
- Convenient. Takes less than second to get your watch ready.
- Subtle and polite (interviews, interactions).
- Sort of jewelry without being jewelry

You wanna know what time it is ? Just look at your wrist, you don't have to dig into your pocket with potentially dirty and greasy hands to grab your phone ( or remove it from your belt ) or look up and probably around for a wall clock if one is even near you that you know of.
It's also good to be less dependant on a smart phone which is less reliable than a decent watch.

I've worn a wrist watch every single day since I was about 3 and I'm not about to stop now.
I had no use for a watch as a 3 year old, but man I loved that Rugrats watch with the banana scented band and wearing a watch just became a habit.

Today my grandmother called me saying she just found a smart watch In her closet she had forgotten to give me for Christmas.
I said that my old Casio's or Timex weekender are smart enough for me, and that I didn't like the smart watch concept.
I told her that while I appreciated the thought I was very happy with what I did get which i use daily so she should just send it to one of my brothers who will probably love it.

So how do you feel about the smart watch concept, and would you try one out ?

To me a smartphone is technological and convenient enough.
All my watch does is tell me the date and time at a quick glance and occasionally provide a stopwatch or timer, anything else is kind of nonsensical in my opinion and I feel technology is starting to find it's way into things it has no business being in.

I'm really not comfortable with the idea of having a watch that's smarter than I am. As it is I've been outsmarted by simple digital watches in the past.

Oh I had a watch that I for the life of me could not turn the alarm off on, i tired of the thing and tossed it in a box of junk. Sometimes I still here it going off when I'm in the garage.
