Not sure how to word this since I'm new to knife collecting but lets say a company like GEC is producing a new serialized knife. Do I always have to go thru a dealer or can I buy direct from the factory? I've visited GEC's website and I see that you can purchase some knives but I want to understand the process of obtaining a numbered knife. Lets say I know they're working on something that I simply gotta have. How do I know when they will be released and how to go about trying to buy it with the best chances of actually snagging one. How does this all work?

If you see something on the GEC schedule that you know you are going to want; just contact your favorite dealer and tell him what you will want. You can probably go as far as requesting an exact serial number from many. We have an "Early Reserve" system setup for this exact reason. If you request a certain serial number, we can have you on the books and guaranteed (if it is actually made) up to 45 days ahead of time.
Be warned thought that these days there are many runs that do not even include serialized versions; and number 1 is off limits. Also, except for stag, most runs that are serialized do not go over #25.
And just to be thorough I will mention that generally GEC is the only maker this will actually be relatively easy with. Many makers do not serialized at all and others randomly disperse serial numbers with no system whatsoever to allocate respectively.
