How do you group your knives?

The first nice knife I ever bought, about 6 years ago, was a Native 5 in Cruwear - that started me off on a collecting jag where I bought about 100 knives and sold off about 60, mostly on Reddit knife_swap. So I have a “small” collection of ~40. I wish I had stopped after that first one.

I have a dozen safe queens that I never use, a dozen nice users, and a 14-15 cheap users. The problem I have is that each knife I own gives me a certain joy in just owning and handling it. My goal for the year is to sell off maybe another 10, but every knife I sell after this point kind of hurts. I’m not a natural collector - but somehow I got obsessed with knives. Maybe in 3-4 years I won’t care anymore & I’ll be happy with 3.
 
30+ users of various and different description. The rest are kept in as new/mint condition for the collection......... :)
 
When I read the OP title I thought of storage and organization... I try to limit my rotation by only having a few available on my dresser, the rest live in the safe. When I want to carry a knife from the safe, I add it to the rotation pile. When the pile gets too big, I put a few I haven't been using back in the safe. The ones that haven't come of the safe in a while are subject to new ownership. All of them are purchased with the intent to use them, but some just never make it into the rotation pile.
 
I carry all of my knives and store them in one of those Pelican style cases. My OCD is demanding a system of organizing them in the case and I haven't figured what to do. By brand? Size? Age? Blade steel? Style/design?

There are no users in my collection & they are simply organized as follows:

1) Automatics - 43
2) Balisongs - 27
3) Karambits - 9
4) Fixed Blades - 81
5) Folders - 300

The numbers are approximate. Haven't done an exact inventory for awhile & there is some overlap between folders & fixed blades that are karambits but otherwise these are discrete categories.

By brand and pattern ; all the trappers together ; Case Trappers together , then the Boker Trappers , don't judge too harsh I have a few Whiskey Bent Hat Trappers ( kind of fun ).

I must admit I have a separate , SACRED , knife wallet with all my M4 knives mostly Spyderco but the odd Benchmade here and there .
 
They all get used. Sone get used more than others depending on task.

I will admit my randall model 1 gets used little - i have less expensive and kess dear knives that will do most if the sane things so why beat it up. But I have and do use it.
 
I made a leather, um, "bucket" to hold my fixed blade knives.
Made a big tool roll for my everyday carry and use knives.
And a smaller one for my nice/expensive gent's folders, titanium folders.
My SAKs are all over the place in various kits and packs.
My favorite kitchen knives are attached to the fridge with magnets.
 
I have some over here and some over there and some are "hiding." I'll organize them some day, yes, I really will.
 
All of my knives are purchased as “users.”
None are purchased not to be used.

So said, many were purchased as ‘good deals’ and probably in multiples. Hence, I have several NIW/NIB awaiting use or to be gifted to others for use.
