How do you haul your gear?

this is my EDC "micro" chest rig. It can be worn chest rig style, or pull one strap and wear it bandoleer style. It hides well under a loose fitting shirt or windbreaker. The base is a Tactical Tailor "MINI-MAV" platform with PALS webbing. The two outer pouches are TT Mag pouches, the center pouch is a TT compass pouch with fuzzy velcro. The patch is self explanatory :D . Everything is Malice clipped to the PALS webbing on the mini-mav, and has bungee cord retention. I can run with this and i do not lose anything.

sorry for the poor pics, i used the bathroom mirror to get a good closeup

worn as chest rig:

Contents: basically stuff i EDC and use everyday, plus some misc just in case stuff:
- ZT-0200 folder
- SureFire L2 flashlight
- 2 powerbars (or "pogeybait" as Mercop and Co call them :p )
- glow stick
- SAK Rescue tool
- 2 x CR123 batts
- "micro" FAK (bandaids, butterfly bandages, steriwipes, alkiwipes, Benadryl tabs)
- Sharpie pen black
- couple sheets RITE IN THE RAIN paper.
- Fox 40

the rig contents are modular, if i want this for the woods, i simply replace the contents of one pouch with a survival kit + fire kit and garbage bag. This kit is handy for a stroll thru the woods , as i have everything I need if i have to stay overnight.....

Bushman that kit is badass, did you get that stuff at Davessurplus?

I would love to have a little kit like that.

Spank Girl told me to tell you that she's a big girl, she should know how to put it down herself, or aim by now. ;)

TAD FAST pack V2 and PS V1. They are the tactical progression of Lowe Alpine contour 30 and contour 40 IMHO. Other light day use is a jumbo fatboy and an LBT 1468-A lumbar pack. Almost forgot the rocket pack, love that thing.

I have 3 packs I use on a regular basis, an Eberlestock Operator, Mystery Ranch Kodiak and a Mountainsmith Maverick. The maverick is the smallest, still a good sized pack by any means, and the one I use most commonly in highly populated areas. If I'm goin way out there I'll take the Kodiak, and if I'm bringing a rifle (hunting, to the range or just backcountry hiking in rough places) I take the Eberle Operator. Maxpedition makes a quality product, Their varsipack line has 100 different options for hip mounting and don't look quite as goofy as a lumbar pack-though mountainsmith's lumbar packs are just dynamite. I like the side slinging models that you can run through a belt so the weight is distributed to your hip. Leaves all your gear right by your hand and very easy to access when you're on the move.

this is for Fonly and DonRearic, who wanted to know my HSGI warlord chest rig contents. (contents are listed in RED)

the contents change quite often, depending on where i'm hiking or if i'm with the GF and the brats. ie: alone, i tend to go minimal with just the basics. If with the GF/kids, i'll add on the 5.11 FAK onto the front and bring extra drum liner bags and a bigger firekit

but for now this is what the chest rig is carrying for multi-day hike on my own. (water is carried on my belt in canteen)

MISSING (out of stock) from pics is:

- waterproof ALOKSAK with WaterPur tabs
- ALOKSAK with 8 powerbars, different flavours)
- ultralight nylon vest
- bottle of DEET bug juice

right side view of wraparound portion of the chest rig, showing Jetbeam M1X with lanyard

left side view of the wrap around portion of the chest rig, showing 5.11 roll up dump pouch. I use the dump pouch for gathering tinder, kindling as i hike, and also when i find a stand of blueberry and huckleberry bushes. It holds 5lbs of berries with ease and rolls up and packs flat when empty. This is one of the best uses i have seen yet for these fold up pouches, and several of my berry picking hiker friends have bought several to wear on their belts for just that purpose.

front view of chest rig, showing Scrapyard S5 lashed to the PALS webbing. Easy access to knife when i need it.

main zippered panel in open position, allowing easy access to the map and compass for navigation, and the pens/pencils. There is Power bars stored in the radio pocket, it hold 4. Opening this main panel allowing access to two hidden panels where more gear is stored.

front view of Admin area, showing pens/pencils/glosticks, SF-E1L, food bars, compass is lanyarded to the flip down panel guylines, i simply pull out the compass out from the radio pouch and it slides down to the map area, no risk of losing it.

pocket behind main admin panel, holding a FAK and a Spyderco large MANIX folder

I use a Berghaus Freeflow 35+8 litre pack.

Here in the UK, this type of traditional pack is still the most common. It has been interesting seeing what other folk use.

Bushman,

Dang, man... those are some great gear set-ups. Thanks for sharing.

i have a cheap Mountain Equipment Co-op pack but im starting to wonder if a military style pack would be a decent idea

the possibilities that the PALS platform has given us recreational users is ENDLESS. There is so many different ways of LEGO'ing a rig up that suits each person needs.
