How do you keep your guy's pocket clip from scratching your steering wheel?

I've never had to worry about a clip being anywhere near my steering wheel... I've ripped a few seats and hooked a knife on a seat belt a thousand or two times. Exactly what kinda car are you getting into and how do get into it?

Throw out the clip !

No way. Do the sensible thing and keep the clip.

Throw out the car and choose the better vehicle

i'm 6'2 and 240 (well spread ;) ) and drive a toyota yaris and never had that problem... but then again i have the seat pretty much all the way back to get the necessary leg space. still, i really don't know how you people manage to do this. i rather get my keychain to catch corners or something.

I usually don't stir up an old thread but thought I would chime in on this one. This issue of scratching steering wheels is a common problem for me, I am a bigger guy, around 30 lbs overweight and yeah I do tend to 'roll' out of the seat sometimes because of a lower back issue. I've scratched the leather covers on at least three steering wheels (one of which was my wifes new Mercedes...ouch). Anyway, this IS a common problem if you get out of the car by twisting your hips out, etc. I had a couple of the old Spyderco Enduras at one time that had the molded on clips, which this wasn't a concern then but they are now long gone.

The only 'tricks' I've heard short of a different carry method are using heat shrink tubing around the clip to cushion it from scratching and I believe some guys have used Plasti Dip with good luck on the clips as well.

Regardless, you are NOT the only person that this has happened to :)

PS: For the record I have since started carrying in a belt pouch instead of pocket, which incidentally freed up my pocket for other goodies! However, be careful with a belt pouch as well....I managed to scratch yet another wheel when my Leatherman Wave in the factory belt pouch somehow managed to hit it. That particular model doesn't have a deep pocket, which is great for getting the tool out easier but the flap can flex enough to get metal to wheel if you're not careful.

I'm 6'3 230 I'm a big guy but can handle myself, Its probably the fact that I am usually in a rush and that's when it happens. I gotta try some different techniques of getting in the car.

Emphasis added--methinks you've answered your own question. Slow down.

Left handed, so my clip will just occasionally brush my seat. Possibly the only advantage to being left handed.
