I have a knife that a man in Spain is interested in. How do you know the laws concerning shipping to foreign countries? I understand some countries have strict laws against shipping knives, or at least I have heard so. Also what is the best/cheapest way to ship to foreign country such as Spain?

Under description I always put down tool as that is what a knife is to me. I THINK that if there is a problem it would be on the other end. There is no law against shipping knives from the USA as far as I know. I have send knives to Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands and so far no problems. I have used the US postal service every time. I don't know about Spain or what type your knife is. I did find this.

Thanks for the info. I had found that myself when I googled "laws on shipping knives to Spain" this morning but, the last link opens up as a dead link when I tried it.
There is not alot of information out there that I can find on this subject. That's why I decided to come back to the "ole standby", Bladeforums.

Ok here is what my latest search pulled up, this site in Fairfax, Va.

Refrence this part of the add.

International orders can also ship via USPS International express or priority 6 to 10 day mail service. This international shipping method is $33.00 USD (up to 4 lbs.) and provides trackable shipments to the following countries: Australia (AU) Belgium (BE) Canada (CA) Denmark (DK) Finland (FI) France (FR) Germany (DE) Iceland (IS) Ireland (IE) Italy (IT) Luxembourg (LU) Netherlands (NL) Norway (NO) Poland (PL) Portugal (PT) Scotland (SF) Spain (ES) Sweden (SE) Switzerland (CH) United Kingdom (GB), etc.

I ass u me and boy sometimes I hate that word! I assume that means if it is legal for him it is legal for me. Or could we possibly be talking about a dealers license here, coming into play?

Anymore advice on this subject?
Is there a site where you can go to look these laws up?
This twice in as many days as I have had questions about which countires OK to ship too?

We usually discuss mailing questions in FEEDBACK, so I am going to move this there for more responses.

It is legal for you to ship ordinary knives within the US or overseas. The Postal Service has an International Mail Manual with information on what each country won't allow in.

Here's their international shipping link for packages.

Cheapest is not always most reliable.

I would suggest putting "cutlery" as a description. That way they won't think you're trying to slip something past them. "Cutlery" is similar to many European languages word for knives.

No problem with moving the thread. I am just looking for answers!
Thanks for the link and the tip on addressing the box.

It's pretty much always up to the person receiving the item to check their local laws regarding the import of knives etc.
As long as what your posting isn't "universaly illegal" (like drugs) then you will see nothing in the way of problems either way.
As a general rule of thumb autos and balis are a no-no, although they are legal to buy in some European countries.

As to marking the package it's usually best to mark it as a "folder", "cutlery", "tool" or something similar.

For postage just make sure and get insurance to cover your self in the event
of any problems and just let the buyer decide how much they want to pay for the rest.
