How do you open yours?

What's your preferred way to deploy a folding knife?

  • Back Flipper

  • Front Flipper

  • Blade hole, nick, or fuller

  • Thumb Stud

  • Thumb Disk

  • Automatic

  • Emerson Wave

  • Other

Holes, flippers (front and regular), autos, OTF.

No thumbstuds, discs, or waves.

I find that if a knife has the ability to open using the lock (button, AXIS, shark, compression, etc.) I tend to use that more often than not on those knives.

I can get along just fine with most opening mechanisms, but the Pena style front flipper is definitely my favorite.

Being a CRK fan boy with more CRK than any other brand, I'm team thumb stud. I prefer that on my Hinderers and Grimso Norseman also, over the flipper tab. I prefer the thumb hole on my Arius, because it's basically the same motion. Never got the Spydie flick down.

I have updated my list because of a reminder from DocJD

Best: Auto
Regular flipper (not front flipper!)
Spydie hole (not a slot!)
Thumb stud
Unlock + gravity or flick
...
Next to absolute worst: Nail nick
Absolute worst: AD15/Scorpion lock

I tried an Emerson years ago but could not get it to work with my shorts. Gave it as a going away present to a friend who was into CQC. It worked with his jeans.

Love me a flipper tab. Not so much a front flipper but back flipper.

The thumb stud & disk are the only types of openers that I don't like like because they usually aren't well positioned for my hand/fingers.

I listed autos as my favorite openers. I can't legally carry an auto knife in CA over 2" long , even though I'm licensed to carry a loaded gun concealed. Yeah, it's dumb. I don't own any autos less than 2" long. So, I just get my kicks opening my autos at home alone. LOL! ;)

For general use, I prefer a flipper (front or rear) but thumb holes are fine (I own a lot of them) and, for SD use, I lean towards knives w/wave openers, particularly when I want/need to carry a karambit.

Nail nicks are the only method available on some knives like my SAKs & Buck 110. It is what it is. 🤷‍♂️

Nail nick.....I like it. :)

Edit: I actually do the "pinch and pull" method most often, but I like having the nail nick, too.

I feel you, if I go into the city (Chicago) they have a 2.5" blade limit, yet I carry a pistol with permit. It's been almost a year since I went into the city, but I'm still sick of stupid laws.

I agree on studs/disk opener. I just don't like the feel either.
