How do you prevent your traditional from sliding out?

When I wear certain pants, especially gym pants (that slippery nylon material), my traditionals try to leave the premises. I've nearly lost one of my davisons, scuffed up a Lloyd, and several cases ended up under my car seat due to this. I'm beginning to settle on the specs of my desired daily use knife to have Davison make but I am torn on how to solve this issue. The two idea I have now both entail a lanyard tube. One is to attach a bail and use a key ring pocket clip. But I hate the idea of a bail on it the 60% of the time I have on jeans or pants that don't have the problem. The other method I am considering is threading the lanyard tube and using a single screw (I could make one) to hold a pocket clip in place. Would be easy on/off for removal or installation when needed.

Now I know many here eschew pocket clips, and often I do too, but I would rather a pocket clip to keep my (what will likely be an 800ish$ Davison) pal in my possession.

So I reach out to you guys. How do you prevent losing your traditionals when wearing pants that they can easily slide out of?

More than knives can slip out. I have a friend who wears those kind of pants and he's left behind keys and a wallet. I told him that a "real man" doesn't wear plastic pants or gym clothes when not exercising :)

Traditional cotton gym pants are not as prone for things to slip out. I wear them at home and if something slips out, I can always find it in the chair. For knives I don't want damaged if they slip out, I use a slip sheath that clips on your pants (William Henry). I have two sizes and except for big knives, one or the other always fits.

I never wear them when not heading to gym or to run. But often I run other errands or am headed to work (where I change) or shopping or pick up baby girl etc. I hate changing clothes at gym unless necessary haha

My wallet is an ainste which has a rubber band (basically) to hold money and the wallet closed. It also hold the thing in my pocket. My car key fob has a rubberyish strip on it that helps keep it in. The knife is the only thing I have trouble with.

I just bought one that I've been wanting. I have a reeve calfskin slip in the closet. I'm gonna glue some thin thin rubber gasket material to one side to make it grabby and that should do exactly what I need it to.

I made a sheath that dangles inside the pocket from a cord attached to the belt (left in the picture). It is a puukko pocket sheath but a sheath made for a folding knife would work the same. If you make the sheath of rough side out leather the friction will aid in keeping it in your pocket.

I am a "gym rat." I've been working out since I was in HS weight training. I'm a pretty big guy and I'm usually always in workout something. I live in GA and it's hot and humid most of the year. I just started last week wearing long pants of any type normally.

My solution has always been to do a tri-fold and then to fold in half with the more padded side outside with handkerchiefs. Slip my pocket knife in the handkerchief with the more padded side on my iPhone - no case - and I've never had a problem.

Other times I use the sheaths from KSF and they've never failed me.

With all that being said, I've recently acquired a few Swiss Army knives for home use. I now carry one of those daily around the house for tasks. If I use one in any workout/track pants - despite its lanyard's length - it falls out of my pocket on the couch now. I started to just tuck the top of the lanyard into the top of my pants and it's stopped.

This was all new to me as well, but my approach stopped it from happening and it never happened with the sheaths or handkerchiefs.

I even thought of the CM video's approach, but tying the knife to my pant's drawstring, and then putting it in my pocket. However, that's only for gym/track pants.

Solution tried and works. Simple.

Now I just need my new Davison double to arrive tomorrow (I hope!)

Get one of those slips with a built in pocket clip and wear it IWB not in your gym shorts pocket .
The waist band carry is much more secure especially if you tighten up the waist draw string and it also stops the weight of the knife dragging down your pocket which is a real annoyance to me when wearing running - gym shorts .

Ken

Edit - this also a great way to carry a knife no matter what type of pants your wearing , you can access the knife 100 times easier when sitting down etc . I can't get anything out of my Wrangler pockets unless I stand up .

Can you point me in the right direction for one of those?

Collector Knives has some decent ones.

I like your practical approach to your solution.

Get the yourself a cheap bag of leather scrap ( like 6$ for a 5lb bag ) from the craft store and make one of these ( the left one with the rough side out ) in 5min

FYI if you do make one, an old fork with the handle folded over works well for making evenly spaced holes

When I was at KSF, Derrick showed me a sheath he's coming out with that has a magnetic clip thing built in. It was pretty cool. Instead of a regular pocket clip it's got a leather flap that comes out of the top with a rare earth magnet in it. The side of the slip has another magnet in it. It snaps together with some good force, but the magnets aren't strong enough to give any problems with getting the knife in and out of the slip. I tried it out in my pocket that I carry my phone in and it didn't cause any problems there, either. I don't know when he's planning on offering them for sale, but it's definitely a cool product that's on the horizon.

I've had the issue with the alox pioneer i always carry. its a slippery devil. I do two things...sometimes i use a small slip with rough leather on the back, but I once attached the lanyard to an alligator clip from my electronics parts box and clip that to the pocket and it worked pretty well.

redeagle66, even if t falls out, it's just a user and abuser.

Cory Hess, you lucky guy. I'd probably have a pic of me with time limits to be in that store. I too am looking forward to that new sheath. I really like what Derrick & Bark Rover has done with the earth magnet sheaths.

Hickory and Steel, great idea. I regret not buying different hides at Blade Show. I'd love to have some toad, giraffe, and other hides to make slips.

Oft times I don't wear a belt in the shop. I then carry a small fixed blade as described by Ken, IWB. Something like this might work for you.

Thanks Dave .
That pic explains better what I was suggesting about the IWB . I'm away from home for a while so can't take a picture of my old IWB Traditional slip . I haven't used it for ages though because I have moved to carrying moderns which negate the need for the slip , they just get clipped IWB and I'm good to go .

I'll be darned if it did't happen again. Same knife as in this original post of mine. I'm getting ready for work this morning at 4am, go to my hoosier cabinet to pick an edc for the day and I don't see my 57 Geppeto whittler. I kow I had it the day before and I know I was wearing those dang sweatpants ts around the house. Back upstairs to search the sweats, nope, look in kids rooms and master bath, nope, downstairs to my man room, nope, back to the hoosier nope, into the livingroom and there it was on the floor by the easy chair. This knife has nine lives, and I'm totally against carrying while wearing sweats from here on out.
I've never had a knife come out of my jeans or dress slacks. It wasn't until 2 weeks ago, like the OP, I tried carrying in sweatpants. The wife and I were in a multi building, multi story trinket/craft/Christmas shop. There was a skiff of snow on the ground, and when we went to leave, I reached in to use my worry stone (57 geppetto whittler in buffalo), gone. I checked the other pocket, not there.
Where do you start?
In the snow, in the store that's dimly lit?
Nope, in between the center console and drivers seat of my ram 2500 diesel. It is a six speed and the slippery sweats must have shot it out. Down on the floor way under the seat up against the console. Lucky me. That's one of those situations where it eats you up inside and then 5 years down the road you clog the vacuum cleaner and find a long lost treasure.
Lesson learned-no carry in sweats.....

I've made up a couple rigs like this one.
Benefits are: easy to retrieve the knife from your pocket, without fishing around down inside; knife doesn't escape on its own; other items in the pocket don't scratch it up.
A shorter or longer cord can be attached, depending on how you want to carry it.
And, if you're not into making your own slip-pouch, a lot of sharpening stones come with a little pouch that can be re-purposed.

Yep. Its more to keep from losing it. I don't mind scratch and dent on my users, but I've already lost enough knives and multi-tools to the TSA when I forget I have them on me at the airport. Those reclining seats in the movie theater are a real danger too. Until I win the lottery, my pocket knives are not quite yet disposables, haha.

Al
