How do you pronounce SOG

1) Terzuola, as in Bob, the genius, tactical folder maker.

2) Centofante, as in Frank, the genius, gents' folder maker.

3) Viele, as in Howard, the other genius tactical folder maker.

I've always pronounced # 1 like tur-zoo-o-la, but I'm probably wrong.

I've always pronounced # 2 like cent-o-fawn-tay, but again I'm probably incorrect.

I've always pronounced # 3 like vee-lee, and on that one, I think I might actually be right.

What say you guys?

#1 & 2, I agree with. Depending on where you live in Europe, and depending on whether or not there was originally an accent over the second e, I would say #3 one of the following ways:

-vee-lə (schwa e sound)

-vee-lay (if e is accented)

- vee-el-lə (phonetically similar to Viyella), my personal guess

- vee-el-lay (if e is accented)

For the long e sound to be at the end the way you think it would be pronounced, generally there would be an "i" at the end of the name (eg. Villi). Those are my guesses, but I could be wrong. Maybe it's pronounced "smith" :D.

They spell their name SOG, not "S.O.G." so what possible reason would you have to not rhyme it with fog?

John L. Plaster and a lot of the guys in MACV-SOG in Vietnam used Gerbers.

If you get a chance read one or both of his books, they are awesome. These guys were quite simply the baddest MF'ers in the history of the US military. The most successful and the highest decorated unit in the history of the US military to be exact.

No, this doesn't hold at all. Acronyms are generally printed in caps without periods. How do you pronounce "TV"?

IMO (are you pronouncing that "immo"?) saying "Sog" sounds silly, it's not a word or anyone's proper name, only natural that people would figure it was an acronym, especially since it's always written in caps. Unlike Busse, or Buck, or Kershaw. That said, it's their name and they can pronounce it however they like.

Phonetically I think. Would be nice to get some clarification on fallkniven though, I've always pronounced it "falk-niven", which I now gather is waaaaay the hell off in left field.

Of course it holds. Take SOCOM for instance, no one says the letters individually, same with alot of naval acronyms like MARPAC, SOSUS, SEALS, etc. Let's not forget RADAR and SONAR. There's definately an established history of pronouncing acronyms as words.

Edit: Though that may be different for SOG, it really depends on what has managed to become popular. I don't know of any dealers that pronounce SOG by the individual letters.

...and yet it DOESN'T. Pronounce "TV". What about "FBI", or "CIA"? Do you Pronounce them "Tveh", "Fuhbye" or"Seeyah"? I think not. Many acronyms (especially the shorter ones--i.e. 3 letters or fewer--LIKE SOG!) are said as letters versus being pronounced as a word. My point wasn't to say it should be said one way or the other; I was responding to someone who said "how could you POSSIBLY think it was pronounced this way Vs: that". It is not stupid to pronounce "SOG" as one would "FBI" or "CIA". IMO (are you pronouncing that "immo"?) "Sog" sounds rotten, but that's their choice.

i've always said Ess Oh Jee, but i didn't know it was Guiness DRAFT and pronounced as it's spelled Draught. like taught

I don't agree, though you've provided some good examples of a few three-letter acronyms that would be fairly difficult to pronounce if one were to attempt to pronounce them as words.

Lets look at one of several, three-letter acronyms used in the U.S. Military. SAW stands for Squad Automatic Weapon. I've never heard anyone refer to it by the letters, S-A-W, instead it is pronounced like the word, saw (a tool).

The perfect example to use to dismiss your argument is one of this forums' favorite cutlery companies, RAT Cutlery. RAT stands for Randall's Adventure & Training. I've never heard a single person refer to it by pronouncing the individual letters, R-A-T, instead it is pronounced like the word, rat (a rodent).

I think, in our culture, if an acronym can be fairly easily pronounced as a word, it is, regardless of the number of letters in it.
