i decided to do a serious cleanup of my gear and try to get it all in one place (instead of scattered all over the house :o ).

its funny, i used to wish i had alot more gear...now that i have quite a bit, i don't know what to do with it all!

unfortunately, i'm quite limited in terms of storage space, so i came up with this, at least for now. it seems to be working alright so far, but its only been about 24 hours...

i have a large plastic chest that is lockable, but there isn't anything really worth too much in there $$ wise... ontop i have some plastic bins with lockable lids that i organized by things carries inside.

inside the big chest i have some shelter related stuff, cooking gear, water bottles;

i keep my large collection of backpacks/man purses/etc in a huge duffel bag on the floor of my closet.

all the blades are in a box down in the basement "shop".

i still have a few things floating around in my clothes closet, but they don't really fit in the chest.

the sleeping bag i have coming will reside under the bed laid out flat to preserve its loft (inside a couple of garbage bags to protect it from the cats ;) ), and the sleeping pad will probably end up there too.

so, where and how do you store the gear you don't have in frequent use, or spares etc of stuff you use often?

I have pretty much the same set up as you have here. I use big plastic bins and smaller plastic tool boxes to organize my stuff so I can find it easily.

I use to have things stashed all over the house. Many items were stored in various packs, but when I wanted a particular item I could never remember where or what pack it was in. So like you I bought a number plastic shoe box size containers and organized the smaller, loose items, and put them on the closet shelf. Miscellaneous small Maxpedition pouches are in a nylon bag next to the boxes. The various larger packs are grouped together in another closet. A few knives are out where I can play with them but most are in a canvas bag. I still have stuff strune around but at least I know where majority is. Unfortunately my wife now can tell how much stuff I have. Fortunately she just kids me about it. :o

Of course once you have a certain number of items, nobody can tell when another knife, pot, etc shows up. :D

I've been meaning to do that for quite some time. Like HornyToad I have my stuff all over the place in packs and drawers - places that I won't forget where it is :) Well, I do.

I've got a few of those plastic containers - I'll have to start organizing. I've been meaning to get my basement in order anyway.

It seems a large tackle box would be great to store some of that smaller stuff in .

Pretty much the same-- plastic boxes and ziplock freezer bags in bigger storage tubs stacked in the garage. One for clothing, another is for kitchen and hydration stuff, another for survival and gadgets. That's where I keep stuff like supplies ofr making PJ cotton balls, rolls of line, fishing tackle, radios, spare compasses, and the like

I have a Rubbermaid "Action Packer" box with the stuff I use for most hiking trips-- water filter, bottles and bladders, PSK, first aid kits, flashlights and headlamps, basic cook kit, belt knife, stuff sacks with gear I take every time. I've pared it down a lot. At one point I had a list on the outside of each tub so I could find certain items. It's all sorted down to a basic pack load now. I could toss 75% of the other stuff and not really miss it (don't let my wife hear that).

I have a tall file drawer that I use to store items I want closer at hand, kits I'm working on and so forth.

Metal cabinet with 3 shelves/milk crates and bins to organize the stuff, though it gets unorganized pretty quick because i',m always swapping out gear. also have 3 Rubbermaid small Action-Packers for my SRT rope gear and my many single and double pulleys/rigging gear etc. The SRT ropes are stored in Seal Line dry bags. Got the rest of the gear packs, bags, etc all stored in a Pelican 340 Cube case.

Flammable stuff like alky stove fuel, is stored in a metal box, as is my 10 bottles of bear spray in an ammo crate. I have 4 boxes of strike anywheres stored in a small ammo crate. All to prevent fire, or discharge of bear spray into the room (it would kill the lil cat)

Pops made me 3 heavy duty multi shelf wood cabinets, but i need to clean up the place to get them inside the room.

Ultimately I want 3 of the largest Pelican cases for my gear, so i can stack them up and for easy truck transport.

Right now my GF has warranted I use some drawers.

Haha, other than that Its in a few old backpacks and tupperware. I don't have a lot, but the majority I have is in my lunada now.

I have a huge old Sailors Chest my mom got for me when I was a kid. Stores most of my outdoors gear pretty well.

hhmmmm - Not a bad idea Darby - I've got a big cedar chest that I hve no idea what to do with...

PERFECT!!!

Right now it's got a bunch of my old military stuff in it.

I have a closet of doom, with a bunch of drawers like dougo has. Frankly most of it spills out into the living room. The wife does not enjoy this...

I have a rolling drawer thing in closet, a locking bin for sharpening items, a big bin in closet and a few loaded backpacks next to my filecabinet.

This works for me

I use something similar to these. A bit wider like a waist-high drawer unit with four drawers in it. On top of this I have four of these same smaller stacking 'organizers' and one ammo can for spray cans, matches, and lighters.

I have a similar set-up for my knives and knife sharpening/making/working gear, and another just for my leather and leather working stuff.

All VERY organized.

I still can never find what I'm looking for... :o

I two big rubbermaid containers for my normal camping gear. Tent, sleepers, lamp, etc.

My hiking/camelback pack is loaded up as my BOB when Im not camping, and my "firearm BOB" in my gun safe right beside it.

So impressive to see such neat packages.

My gears are stored in single cardboard box. some overflown, not to mention. ;)

I store it just randomly spread around in my room. Most of the small stuff I have in a dresser. The larger stuff I have on shelves, or sitting on the floor in my room.

I use rubbermaid type containers as well. Food/cooking, tools, and misc. Nothing fancy here.

WOW!! This is a great thread. I just started cleaning out my basement and I'm trying to think of a way to organize and get all my crap together and such. Hopefully I can take some ideas from here and use them.

Anyone have any more? Please? :D

One wood box for knives
One wood box for optics/navigation/ comms(binocs/spare riflescopes/Compasses/GPS/GMRS and CB)
One duffel for Camo and fleece plus my Ghillie suit
Several Ammo cans for...Ammo
One wood Winchester ammo box for Shotgun Shells
One Rubbermaid Tote for Car camping kitchen

I used to have more. I decided a few years ago, I didn't need most of the stuff. I can make do with just about nothing.
