how do you store your gear?

Bushman5,

I've got a couple of those big Pelican cases. Although they are hell for strong, I find I don't use them as much as I thought I would because of their weight. They eat up too much of the airline 50lb luggage allowance and add a lot of weight to anything I'm tossing in the truck. They are a bit slow to open because of all the sturdy latches. Plus, they are expensive. If you really need ultimate durability they are worth it but many times I find myself just tossing stuff in a much lighter Sterilite or Rubbermaid container and shoving it in the old truck.

with the exception of the gear that lives in my packs..the vast majority of our gear is stored in a big plastic bin.. i also have a small little stack of drawers on my work bench...

True, they are slow to open, and heavy when fully geared up, but i dont fly, only truck so the weight does'nt bug me. Pricewise, yea, the can be pricey, but to me they are money well spent. A buddy of mine had his garage collapse (4 feet of wet snow on roof) and the only thing that survived was his forest fire gear in the big cube case (i think it was a 370 case). cant argue with that.

i also drive down logging roads a LOT , and the dust clouds are pretty spectacular. So is the rain we get. Its nice to wipe of the case and open it up and have dry clean gear. I have bounced one case outta the truck and it tumbled down the bank, but my gear was intact. I get dual usage out of them, gear storage and hard use in the woods.

EDIT:

I may have a slight problem....... :D:D:D:D

By the way, have you ever read the humorous warranty cards? Pelican guarantees them against everything except Griz, Great White Sharks, and children under 5!

Christ Bushman, you could afford an AR-15 with the money you have in all of those cases...

(Im just jealous)

:D

nope, our nanny state wont allow us to own nice AR15s..... if they did i would , then i could get the Pelican case thats specially made for 8 AR15s...

Plastic bins for me too...I love organizing stuff into bins...:D

My pack stays packed as a BOB when at home, everything else (knives, sharpening supplies, misc. gear) goes into a few stackable bins. For car camping, it's easy to just throw my knife bin and one other with misc stuff in the car.

hhmmmm - Not a bad idea Darby - I've got a big cedar chest that I hve no idea what to do with...

PERFECT!!!

Right now it's got a bunch of my old military stuff in it.

Its great...except when you are moving(like today) and its full of steel and other outdoors stuff and seems to weigh a ton.

But when its stationary its great lol. And it fits in nicely with the outdoors gear, all woodsy and well worn.

I keep most of my gear in an ancient trunk I found in a basement of a house we owned years ago. I refinished it, and my ammo cans w/ ammo, tents, hammocks, tarps, lanterns machetes, and cook stuff are in there. I took a old speedbag rack, and removed the round base and bag and use the metal arms for my bow, arrows, fishing poles, and long guns (the guns have a length of steel cable throgh the trigger guards, and locked to the arms), Small stuff goes into cigar boxes, one for folders, one for fire, one for navigation stuff etc... My handgun(I only own one at the time:() goes in a really nice Cohiba cigar box with mags. My knives and the handgun are all in a locked dressor drawer.

I am looking for an old wardrobe to convert into a gun cabinet/knife cabinet. However many auctions and garage sales have turned up nothing yet.
