How does a BM compare to a Khukuri

Nice vid, Jeremy. I definitely feel the need now to go forth into the woods and do the same with my NMFBM and CS Gurkha Kukri and beat the bejesus out of some dead trees and see which comes out on top.

cool!!! the NMFBM is a supreme chopper but, the fast ER kukri is great for limb work... It takes away the fear of overswinging leg chops!!!

Interesting posts. I have both a BM-E and several HI khukuris. The khuk's outchop the BM-E easily 3 to 1, if not more. It's all a matter of geometry, that's what they were designed to do. Even my smaller ones, such as the BAS. They do many other tasks quite well also, they can double as a draw knife comfortably due to their shape. They are awesome choppers, and built like tanks. Get an HI if you can, and go out and have some fun!

I've owned so many HI khuk's in the past but a few years I started trading and selling em to fund my INFI collection. I like them both ! Never tried a cold steel and am considering one !

Extrema Ratio KH Kukri 18" oal .250 thick, N690 steel.. pretty cool blade! like i said not traditional but, very modern and COOL! The Busse Kukri will be very cool!! !!!!! GARTH !!!!!! Nudge the Boss, tell tell him your grinding one up!!

I'm tellin you I had a great time choppin,, That limb went like ten foot in the air,, and was like six inches across, I had already cut it once, and when I finished I tried choppin the knives into the limb side by side, they kept fallin out!! I finally just thought it was so funny, I would show everyone in Outtakes!! We are all guilty of not using our knives enough, Thanks again,

I went out and did a chopping comparison, FBMLE vs. HI 18" Dui Churra (basically an AK with fuller and a full tang). The HI chopped hardwood at about 85% of the FBMLE with no damage to the blade.

The HI Khukri (mine cost $120) is a bargain and a very fun knife but the Battle Mistress is a better chopper. On softwood the Khukri is a monster and swings with a sweet arc. :)

Busse needs to make a Khuk!

It looks like there are some for and some against particular knife styles and brands. There is so many different styles out there, it just shows vast variety we have available. Sometimes we get a good one. Sometimes we don't. That's just the fact of life.

As another post wisely pointed out, if we are able we should try both styles and then decided for yourself. When you boil it down it really does come down to personal preference. In effect all reviews and reply's posted here, in there own way, are valid.

I guess that's the beauty of collecting and using knives.

As Brendan said, if Jerry made a INFI Khukuri, that would be something.

Funny, that no one mentioned cliff stamps comparison that he did back in EARLY 2000. I guess most of you do not remember or were not around. Anyway, he came to the same conclussion I did. In order for the khukuri to be more effective than the BM it has to be much bigger and have much more weight up front.

The largest 15 inch khukuri is the 15 AK. Yet, my SHBM outchopped it every time. When I got the 22 inch AK, it chopped better, but was to hard to control at nearly 5 lbs. So when I asked HI to make me an 18 inch AK, he had the Kami's do it for me and it proved to be perfect. It chopped better than my SHBM by a slight margin. After an hour though the SHBM would come right back, because it was lighter, much lighter. Also held an edge better.

About the only person on the boards at the time that had as much chopping experience as me when using these two knives was cliff. I chopped about 7-8 chords of wood over 5 years using nothing but, my SHBM, 18 inch AK, 15 inch AK and an assortment of other knives that broke during these sessions. I lost most of my ontarios during this time, except for the marine raider. I used a GH Khukuri for a month and it fell apart.

Also, I could never get the Khukuri throwing down, so I used my SHBM to throw at the logs in between chopping sessions. I broke many other knives doing this.

I would love to have a Busse Khuk, but not because it is more efficient than the BM, because it is not, but because that would be the coolest busse ever.

I agree, I think a Busse khuk would be an amazing blade and Jerry would sell a bunch

Not at all, at least from me. I like both. I just disagree, my khukuri's easily outchop the BM-E and any other knife with similar geometry, at least in my hands. But I still love my BM-E, I posted a thread years ago about chopping down a couple of trees in my front yard with it and a CS trailmaster. I also limbed and bucked both trees with them. Just because I think something does better in a niche doesn't mean that I don't like the BM-E.

We've been asking for an INFI khukuri for years.... Sign me up!
