How does a nearly Perfect Knife Not be Perfect?

Well here I go. A Mini rant...... I suppose.

I recently acquired a Tops Silent Hero Fixed Blade. I am stoked about the knife itself, its awesome... However this said and being in the profession of design myself, why in the world would they make a hole for 550 Para cord in the butt of the knife when one has to remove all the guts of the cord just to sneak it through the ridiculous size hole for it? I Don't Get IT....Ok I feel better TD

Some genius designer thought it would be a value added benefit. Probably never field tested it.

Hell, I don't know? I just measured it and came up with ~.125 inches. This particular knife has another elongated hole at the finger choil to allow a cord to be run through here as well. Thus giving the attribute of better control in hand because you can create a para cord guard if you will. I love the knife itself and not bashing it at all. But if I designed something like this I would fire myself! Its not complicated, how could this go missed? Still my best 6" fixed blade to date

Terrible sheath ruin a knife for me. It is ridiculous to pay half or more than half of what you paid for the knife to get a good sheath made for it.

A folder with a partially serrated edge ruins it for me.

With respect to the OP, I looked at the knife and it appears that there's enough meat there to bore out the hole with a good drill bit. However, it's hard to tell if there is a lanyard tube in there based on the pictures that I've seen. If it in fact does have a lanyard tube, well it might make things a bit more difficult.

I could overlook the sheath but understand what you are saying. It doesn't make much sense? I know that we all have our own opinions, I respect that even when it comes to preferences. But both the sheath, and the Hole on this particular knife are poorly designed. Not so much opinion but facts. Once more getting back to opinion, IMHO the knife itself is killer.... And I suspect that is why I do not understand some of the other issues. I'm getting old, so my thought process is did they just get lucky with the design of this knife? I am aware it was designed by Anton.. I Hope.

Yes there is a lanyard Tube, but even then why would one have to modify a new knife...

I agree wholeheartedly. If you love the knife other than that though, you can make the modification and end up with the "perfect" knife. I'm always looking for solutions to problems, it's part of the curse of being an engineer. :)

Yes Sir "Accelerator" The curse of the engineer, not the first time:D

I would guess the tube in the handle was an afterthought and they didnt make the hole bigger when they decided to add it. Also the majority of lanyards I have bought for some reason have had the inner core removed as its much easier to make them.

I have snuck paracord through some pretty small lanyard holes. You can tape the end, kind of in a conical fashion, with the narrow part at the end. Might be worth a shot.

Simple---the hole wasn't made "for 550 paracord..." Either gut the paracord or go with something using leather lace or smaller intact paracord.

Just to be sure...you have tried melting the intact 550 para to a point and putting some through and then trying to drag it through with pliers, right??? Sometimes that works, even if you have to yank pretty hard. But it you're trying to attach a pre-made lanyard back through its own loop, no, that won't fly on this knife.

You should be able to fit one paracord through that size hole no problem. You've tried using a small string looped around the para and dragging it through?

Mike

If the hole is .125 that's 3.175 mm and you should be able to get a full 550 paracord through there no prob. Use a string and pull it through.

Sounds like a whole lot of work to me every time you want to do it. I'll stick with my solution, drill press. Problem solved forever.
