I bought my boyfriend a Benchmade Automatic knife for his birthday from Cabella's. I don't know much about this brand. I wanted to get him a higher end pocket knife. He asked for a Buck or a Gerber, so where does Benchmade rate compare to these two brands? It is and automatic knife and I payed $200 for it, compared to $80 for the other brand, I want him to have quality knife. Any help? I got him the BM Mini Reflex # on it is 2550, it is black w a black blade, I was afraid Cabela's was charging too much. I did find one online for $160 but I don't have the time to have it shipped. Thanks everyone for all of the help!!

 You did very well, I'd be very happy with a benchmade for my birthday. In my opinion, I'd say benchmade is a tier above buck though buck has some quality knives, benchmade overall offers more quality materials, better steel, handle materials, etc. Gerber while once were good, have seemed to shift to lower quality chinese made knives. Pretty much anything by Benchmade, Spyderco, and Kershaw, with Kershaw having more budget minded options with good quality and Spyderco and Benchmade having higher priced more exotic materials.

Hello Krys and welcome to BF

Benchmade is a quality brand, and in my opinion,on an entirely different level compared to the other 2 brands you mention. They use high-end steels and other quality components such as titanium and G-10 handle material, on alot of their models. Your boyfriend is a very lucky man, getting a Benchmade Auto. Good choice

Everyone else already covered what I was going to say about Benchmade before I posted, but I just wanted to caution you about the automatic knives. They are sold in many stores, but they're not always completely legal to carry. This might be a problem, might not, but I figured I would mention it.

If it is a problem, you might want to check out their "assisted opening" models or one of their models with an AXIS lock. All of them are a bit "snazier" opening mechanisms than standard and very convenient. Personally I like the AXIS lock the most of all of them.

My wife has never bought me a Benchmade Auto. :(

IMO, just about anything Benchmade is better than any Buck or Gerber, especially the new ones made over seas.

Hi. Yep, you made a good pick. I would much rather have a Benchmade than the others mentioned. I make knives, and know more than a bit about other makers and their steels. And Benchmade is one very high on my list of Good knives. I just happen to have one clipped in my pocket as I send this note to you. I also have a assisted opener as well. Both are Very! good knives. Your boyfriend is a lucky guy.!!! Great gift he can brag about. Enjoy. edgy:thumbup:

Welcome to BF!

You did very well, Though they may not get a 10 out of 10 benchmade still puts out a quality product and one that is usually a little more refined. Next time though come talk to us first, you probably over payed compared to web prices.

I think Benchmade and Spyderco are the two best production companies out there. I am not including Chris Reeve and makers of that sort although they might fall in that category.

Buy a Spyderco instead, as I found Spydies are generally more male appealing aesthetically.

That's a great gift, you're a good gal. Learn your local knife laws though, you don't want him to get arrested for carrying the auto and lose it. BM autos are some great knives, I'm guessing that was available at a Cabelas out west? I've seen some of BM's latest offerings, and while I wasn't too excited about them, they still make reliable products.

Am I the only one who wants to know what model he got? They are great knives so which one did you get him?

Yep BM and Spyderco, and I'll add Kershaw in there too. Always been happy with their production knives.

I bought my boyfriend a Benchmade Automatic knife for his birthday...

Marry me! ;)

He's a lucky man. :)

In my own personal rating scale of mass production knife manufacturers, it is Kershaw/ZT first, followed by Spyderco and Benchmade.... but I am a bit skewed. :p

In other words, ya done good!

I think Benchmade and Spyderco are the two best production companies (for folding knives that are made with a modern edgy appearance)out there. I am not including Chris Reeve and makers of that sort although they might fall in that category.

Sorry I had to clarify that statement a bit.

You did well indeed, lucky fella!

I'd also like to know which auto you purchased.:D

I think Benchmade makes some of the most sophisticated, nicely detailed knives available, with very high quality materials, great attention to detail and solid, precise construction. They currently have several models that are-- arguably--among the best production knives, made by a large manufacturer, money can buy. I own several Benchmade autos. In fact, a new one should arrive this week.

They are a step up from a standard production Buck in terms of materials, fit, finish and detail--and that says a lot: Buck has been making quality knives for a long, long time.

Either Benchmade or Buck will be a large step up from a Gerber.

Best,
heekma

Benchmade rates #1 in my book. That is a great gift and your boyfriend is a lucky man. :D
