How does Benchmade rate??

Great choice. I'd be very happy with that gift. You should advise your boyfriend that he should check local laws when he travels. Autos are illegal in many places, Canada for example. Of course, that can be framed as making it a more awesome gift, "Just be a little careful when you travel. These are illegal in some places." It's cool thinking that you are carrying something that is illegal in other places

Like most others have said.

I see Benchmade as a step above Buck and Gerber. I don't care for BM's personally, but I won't say they don't make good knives.

I'm a Spyderco guy. :D

WAY better than the other two.

Coulda gotten it cheaper though.

Good choice....you qualify for the awesome girlfriend award.

This is the Cabela's in Idaho

Hi again Krys. I lived in Idaho for 7 years. (Wish I was still there, Great State) As I remember the laws there, if he keeps it cliped to his belt or pocket so you can see some or all of it, it should be OK to carry. (Maybe not in downtown Boise) but where I lived near Weiser & Payette, I talked to the local Troopers and was told, "as long as some of it can be seen" that way its not a concealed weapon. Jezz in weiser at the small stores, it was Not uncommon to see people having a bowie, and even a 6 gun on their belts. (I'm not kiddin ya) Some of the laws there are much better for people who want to carry a tool=knife, gun=protection, mace/CS gas=self defence. Its just a cool state. I could sit here and tell ya story after story about how wild, or in my mind, Free, Idaho is. Just be careful going into other states. He's a lucky guy. Enjoy. edgy:thumbup:
Oh and he will still Brag about his new benchmade! trust me. ;)

Yeah, it's like that in Washington state too, but Seattle has its own municipal code outlawing fixed blades or blades over 3". It seems that cities that are more urban and populated are more likely to have city code regarding knives.

No auto's are legal to carry in Wa state unless you are a LEO or active military. Just thought I would throw that out there in case you are from Spokane Wa. That is if you are talking the Post Falls Cabelas too. I know that ID. and OR. you can carry any auto if it is not totally concealed.

afer having looked up laws in idaho he should be just fine although depending on where u live you might want to check municipal laws or ask a police officer.
btw great choice with tour purchase i would be very happy to receive one as a gift! good job!

How to properly "rate" a knife company?
- Functionality
- Design
- Materials
- Quality
- Innovation
- Price

It's true, Benchmade and Spyderco are neck and neck for the #1 spot. Benchmade bests Spyderco, slightly, in design over function. Most Spydercos focus on function and then design. Spyderco bests Benchmade in price. Benchmade and Spyderco are fairly even in the materials department, except Benchmade's expensive "Gold class" features the ne plus ultra materials. Both companies put out quality products, and truly innovate each year--unlike Buck or Gerber who tend to stick to the formula, or alter the formula and fail most of the time.
^Just MO.

Oh, yeah, didn't mean to insinuate otherwise. Though what's weird is that I know you can purchase and own an auto, but you canot legally own a switch-blade, which makes me wonder where they draw the distinction and why carrying an auto is not legal if it's not a swtich-blade and you can own it. I think some LEO are just as confused about it as I am.

Anyway, my main point was that most of the places in the PNW seem to be pretty liberal with knife laws, but then as soon as you enter a large metropolitan area they get restrictive. So whereas in Yakima (my hometown) I can carry a Buck 119 on my belt at the grocery store without anyone even batting an eye, a 4" Benchmade with an AXIS lock in Seattle will get me weird stares and not be legal in Seattle.

 You can own an auto but not a switchblade? They are the same. Like you can own a car but no vehicle?

Buy a Spyderco instead, as I found Spydies are generally more male appealing aesthetically.

I have to disagree with that statement, this is a personal preference and varies with the individual. I haven't seen or held any Spyderco Autos (not even sure if they exist)..

I have, however owned several Benchmade Autos and they very well built and perform flawlessly.

As for standard folders, both Benchmade and Spyderco make excellent products and while aesthetics are subjective, you will not find any shortage of BM and Spyderco fanboys that jump at the chance to recommend one over the other until they are blue in the face.

To answer the original question: Benchmade rates very high in quality and customer service. You chose well.....

Good Pick. I carry a benchmade Mini Griptilian. 154cm steel. I am with the person that said to be careful about autos. I would check the local laws in your area and make sure your boyfriend can carry such knife. But to be realistic, the way benchmades open are very fast without an auto. The autos have locks. In my opinion a auto is a sort of " I like " instead of " I need " type of thing. I bought an auto. Traded it for a manual folder by Kershaw. Also I agree with everyone about Gerber. It is a shame because they made some of the finest knives in the past. I do not even look at them anymore. But my main knives and the ones I have the most of are benchmade and Kershaw. Both good choices. I think for the dollar you spend you get the most knife with Kershaw. But like i said I have a benchmade clipped to my pocket right now.

Good luck and I highly recomend you check your local laws on autos expecially if you can still return the auto. Of course as usual I did not check the date of this post and it may be past your lucky boyfriends birthday already.

Cheers

FWIW:

I've found that "BladeHQ" will price match, and actually drop the price on their knives a bit, including shipping, from whatever the best "legitimate" competitors price is for a specific product.

Just a thought.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

Krys, you did good no worries .
lol, make sure you update this thread with his reaction/feedback! :D
