How does the GEC #15 Barlow compare to the Boys knife?

csisland it seems the timing of your inquiry is good! Grab an ebony or whatever cover you prefer. It's a low risk investment as it can easily be sold or traded off if it's not to your liking. My whole downward spiral into the traditional addiction began with a single spear rust red jig bone boys knife. Today I have multiple versions of the 15 pattern. Jon really covered all the bases so I'll refrain from repeating that info.

Does anyone know if there is any history behind the crown lifter etch or is that a GEC original? I think it looks very old school cool.:thumbup:

Yes! Another Boy's Knife run!! The crown lifter etch is very cool and I'm just guessing, but I think Sue at GEC designed that one. Nice!!

This run will have end caps and the usual covers. Sweet!

Will this run have any long pulls, or just the crescent nicks in the above photo?

Thanks!

I like the looks of that single spear ebony.

now that youre narrowing your options down to single blade and ebony
you have the choice of a Barehead Barlow, or a Boys Jacknife with a headcap.

Charlie and Gunstock can probably put you into a single spear ebony charlow.. instant classic, but, keep in mind the Walnut going into this run of charlows is some of the most unique cover material involved, it belonged to Charlies Dad, its old. Walnut is Only on this Charlow single spear this run.

Hard to go wrong with any of them. The pictures make me wonder if the current boys knife is using Macassar ebony. It seems to not be as pure black as the Gabon they were just using on the Radio knife, and on this Charlow run.

lets see, Gabon Ebony, Charlow yes, Boys, no?
American Black Walnut heirloom gunstock, Charlow yes, Boys no
yes, Im biased, get a Charlow, Dude! its Gabon Ebony man! ;-)

The dealers, including me, will have 1-blades by the weekend or Monday latest.

Will this run have any long pulls

No
the next long pull will be a razor

I too don't think you can go wrong with your selection.

I have had both and ended up keeping the single bladed Charlow. It just felt like a better balanced, pocket friendly knife:)

There is some suggestion that the longer Barlow bolsters offer a bit more strength to the frame. I'd say if you were finding those kind of weaknesses you're probably using the wrong tool for the job!

What about the small nick vs. the long nick? Is one better than the other? I see some on here saying they prefer the long nick.

Me too, looks pretty good

I'd be pre-ordering one right now if it was barehead. I don't know why, but the #15s just look way better to me as a barehead knife.

Long pulls. And yeah, I'm in that camp. But I wouldn't say that one is "better" than the other - it's just preference.

the long pull is not offered this time
you can only have it if you find old stock, like the ones I linked above
he who hesitates will find the current run is lost

Actually I'm kind of glad I wasn't able to get the wood Barlow because I needed a pair of shoes a lot more than I needed another knife.

enjoy your new shoes

Honestly, they don't feel much different in the hand to me. As others have said, it's the same knife.

Excellent and atmospheric shot

What have I got in the range? Barlow Tan Bone Spear, Boy's Clip White Bone, Boy's Redbone with bottle opener (the Redbone is fantastic)

What I NEED is a Shepfoot EZ Open or Sheepfoot Barlow......keeping my glad eye open.

Thanks, Will

I think the tc barlow and boys jack are about the perfect knife. Can't go wrong with either in my opinion.

This one has been my only carry since September last year, save for an ill fated three weeks with a pony jack. Bad idea on my part. That one went to my oldest for his first nice knife.

I'd still like to find a boys knife in ebony though. I gave my only ebony knife to a co-worker for his nephew's first knife. Kid deserved it, no father present, luckily has a great uncle, and he definitely appreciated the gesture, so it was good ask around.

Ebony just has that old world appeal. Wears like iron, warm and tough at the same time. Beautiful stuff.

I sent you an email...

I came along just a little too late to this party and missed the ebony spear point with the long pull.
I think I might go for that cap lifter, though. Just have to convince my husband of its virtues and that yes, I really do need another knife, even though I just got one last week.

That 2 blade long pull ebony spear boys knife is my grail. I first found out about those back in October. Unfortunately, I just haven't been able to get my hands on one. One day, hopefully.
